got a JD 60 in our club. It puffs a little blue smoke while it idles. asked him about it , says he dropped the oil ring on the pistons. Why would you do this? Will it damage the comp. rings? It doesn,t smoke at all while pulling.

Dave, can't answer your question any more than the guy who asked me why his Dad always pulled his oil rings off his D just before doing heavy plowing, then putting them back on after he was done, his Dad said he had more horse power with them off. Just a thought here, maybe more oil to the compression rings helped them seal better.
Beats me but hope Clooney will give us his thoughts on this.

He may not be telling you the whole story why he left the oil ring off. The common reason for that is he has a stroke in it running stock rod lengths or pistons causing the oil ring to leave the cylinder. So rather than lengthen the rod or get different pistons or both he chose to leave the oil ring off and let it smoke and use a little oil. Now you may just know "The Rest Of The Story"

this is what I suspect. He claims to only have a 70 cam. It cracks to much for only that.

I'm no expert on the 60 although I do own one. I guess he thinks he's gaining a little horsepower with out the extra ring. I can see the logic but I find it very hard to believe the benefits are even noticeable. I know that a lot of performance engine builders (drag racing that is) use very narrow rings as thin as 1/16 of an inch to increase unit pressure against the cylinder wall and therefore decrease leak-down, although these thin rings have a very short service life. I will admit I don't know the answer to this situation, just my 2 cents.
