Hey ChadS,

Do you think the TA and rear end of a 460 will hold up to the power of a 400 series diesel motor? What for modifications might I need to do to beef up the rear a little? Thanks you very much sir for all your help and helpful information.

A rule of thumb when making high HP in a 4 or 560 is shift torque up and not down while under load. You can come out in the low-side and shift up but don't shift back at the end of the track.

I don't think you will have any problems unless you are running a turbo or two.

Depends on how well the TA is beefed up. Id say the time when it would break, is when you are lugging it really really hard, and try to shift it, and let the 400 series engine put all the torque back through the transmission and TA. all that extra torque and power could explode the sprag clutch. If you drive it right, and have power, heck, you may not even shift it at all and leave it in the high side, or direct drive. On the old letter series and high HP, they break when you over stress them, or really try to work that big engine really hard, and have done nothing to re enforce the tranny. If it was me, Id go with a fast ring and pinion, and a stout TA, the Industrial 460's had smaller tires and the same ground speed as the row crops, so its like a W6 ring and pinion in an M. 4th gear would not be a good gear to run, its a very small gear, and could break, 3rd and second would be a better choice of gear, a little bigger and thicker than 4th, the ring and pinion would allow you to drop gears and not lose much ground speed. Add rpms, and you could have a pretty fast gear selection under 4th, So think about ways to beef the tranny and TA up, or eliminate the TA and run a straight 5 speed transmission. I would not be afraid to put in a single charger 400 series engine in a beefed up 460 rear end, and no more than 3000rpms. Id say a stock rebuilt TA could handle 150 hp, but after 150, you better do something, and run a scatter blanket. There is pullers who run the Red Diamond 501's all bored out and stroked and make over 200+hp, and live,, or at least I hear they have,, A cheap alternative, since your wanting to do all this, M rear end, or eliminate the TA entirely and do it with gearing, and tire size to rely on your ground speed. Would be a stout SOB!! If you did this! Hope this helps, A few pullers that run a huge HP 460 mite jump in and give you some more info too. Chad

I have a 560 with no governor so it runs as many rpm as it will breath, and with 18x38 tires I am going 7.5 mph in second at full throttle... I normally don't open up all the way until I hear the engine pull a little. JUst a little vaguely related info.
