Bigger rims

I have a old allis WD stock puller with 13.6 28 field & road firestones about 40% tread on 12 inch power adjust rims. The rims are rusted beyond repair. Could I run wider 14 inch rims like the ones on a D17 and stay with my 13.6 tires? I've been told, by my tire salesman, that might mess up the way they grip at lower pressures, but I kinda got the feeling he just told me that because he wanted to sell me some new properly sized tires. What do you pullers think?

Thanks for the help!

There is a definite gain with wider rims. 14" is a little wide for a 13.6, but it will work. Be careful not to run the air pressure too low as you will have trouble keeping them on the beads. I have found that you run a little more air pressure with the wider rim anyways. Don't be surprised if it takes you several pulls to figure out your new optimum tire pressure.
