Have 460 Farmall turbocharged running at 3200 rpm and been running 15.5 -38 45 degree tires road sharp. Caught in between gears as I spin most of the way down the track in third gear and on some tracks cannot keep above the turbo in 4th gear. What would be the ground speed difference by staying in third gear and going to Armstrong 16.9-38 tires ? Would I pick up 1 to 1.5 miles per hour or not that much? Anybody made this change and did it work? Plus I like the idea of pulling in third since it is quite a larger tooth gear than fourth. Any help would be appreciated as we have our big fair pull this Sat. the 20th. Thanks Migraine

According to the Firestone data book, the 16.9 will be approximately 8% faster than a 15.5 tire. Unless you are currently turning the tires 12 mph or better, the 16.9 is not going to get you another 1 mph. What it will do is provide much more traction than a 15.5 and that along with the extra height/speed of the tire should have the desired effect.

Id say your onthe right track by the 16.9s, and speeding up 3rd a tad, could you run 4th with the 15.5s, run the TA in low, and shift it back to high if it dont hook, or spins alot? You may spin out more wit the 16.9s if the ground speed doesnt get you that much more, but, thats a tall tire,,,, so you mite gir r done. what kind of track you pulling on? What has worked in the past for you on this track? Chad

The tracks locally are really quite soft and have some sand in them so they don't turn to mush during the rainy season. My other 560 gas tractors do good with 16.9 tires but that is stock classes at 4-5 mph. I just don't like the idea of shifting the TA with all the power going through it. This tractor is named "Migraine" for a reason and I'm trying to keep it together but need a little more speed to make the ratio to the ground better(plus, we like coming in first rather than second) Thanks any other ideas? Migraine

A few,,, My 50 H, has problems with power sometimes, it does farily well most of the time, but sometimes I have to do things to set it up so it dont run out of power so quickly. Ive found that running a lower hitch height seems to help give back some power and it takes some of the hook out of the tires, in cases where ground speed is how it gets done, and HP is on the brink of being enough, or not enough, the hitch trick does help. Im not for sure how much work you want to do, but maybe in the future sometime down the road, you may want to find a ring and pinion from an industrial 460, its like the W4-W6 for the H-M but for the 460,,, That can give you the half step your looking for,, speed up all the gears a half step. I do belive that the 16.9s will speed you up close to the half gear your looking for,, and back to 3rd gear,, but, do you want to change that much on your set up? No, Im not much for shifting TA's under power, If you slow the tractor down, you have more rpm, and maybe you can place the weights in a stratigic location to utilize the power to create leverage. I know where there is a 460 utility for parts that has that ring and pinion,, if that could work for you in the future, It had the short tires, and same ground speed as the row crops, it just mite put you in the gear you want, and give you the half gear in 3rd and keep it inthe stronger gear. Thanks for the responses. I know where there is a rear end for a 460 Ind. so might work on that for the winter, but for now I might just throw the 16.9 tires on and see what transpires. We'll get it figured out with some help I'm sure. Migraine

To Chad from a few threads ago, I'm running the 263, I kinda looking for a 301. Also I have a picture of Migraine from a couple of years ago at the Banks (OR) BBQ and pull which is August 20-21, which is too bad because it sounds like there's a pull up in Lynden WA too. That means that none of you WA guys will come down, and that I'll have to pull exhibition (alone) or with the V8 mods. I did that last year on Saturday finished about 25' behind the last mod. Migraine, have you ever gotten a speed during a pull with your 460. I would be curious what 3rd at 3200 is. For me 2nd at probably 4000+ rpm with 18.4x38 is 7.5 mph with my 560.

Oh yeah got distracted , I'll see if I can find a scanner and post a few NW tractors.

Steve come up and pull with us at the fair on Sat and then go back and pull in Banks, Or. on Sunday. We've done that a few times. Monday morning comes too soon then but you get over it. Vander Zanden is bringing both his Allison and Double Shot up to get us some action against Larry Finneg(sp)double engine tractor. "Migraine has her new clothes on now , don't think you've seen her since she got the makeover. She just needs to pull as good as she looks now., Migraine
