Hi guys. Started complete disassembly of my G this morning. I noticed something that I hadn't really payed any attention to the previous time I had the engine apart. My pistons appear to be stock cast-iron units with a completely flat top. They are .045 over but other than that I thought they were JD stock units. However, while rotating the crankshaft to remove the pistons, I noticed that the crown of the piston comes within approx. 1/4 inch of the spark plug hole, right up to the edge of the chamfer. Is this normal or do I already have some sort of a hi-comp piston? Could they be the pistons JD produced to burn gasoline? I've never had a G apart before besides this one, so I'm just curious. Also wondering about new aluminum M&W pistons with an offset ground crank (for A rods). Will they clear the spark plug hole or do they have to be machined? I know these are probably stupid questions, but I appreciate any help you guys can give me. Thank you.

G-MAN finished a g coupla months ago with 1 inch stroke and 60 rods..used all top rings with oil ring on the 4th leaving off bottom ring..i should write this down when i do a tractor but i think we cut the piston off to .375 from the end of block.. had jerry work on head and milled it the the eyebrow big valves and porting..can't remember if we notched a litte more for the spark plug or not..if there is just a little bit of space when it starts it will advance 20 degrees so the piston will be far behind the spark plug running..the way i figured it came out 10.25 to 1 compression..71 hp at 535 rpm on the dyno jerry's manifold and roberts carb work on 51.. lynn

G-Man my aluminum pistons prior to the hair cut I gave them were .465" from the end of the block to the outside edges of the piston face.

Hello again burns, and thanks for the info. I was wondering how far up in the bores your stock pistons came, if you measured. I'd like to e-mail you some specific questions about your G because I hate taking up board space with them. How do I find your e-mail address? I'm not smart enough to figure it out I guess. Thanks, G-MAN deeremeyer@yahoo.com

Take a look at this link. If you can read the writing, you will see that this piston has already been milled once. If my memory serves me correct, I cut these pistons once more to achieve the desired compression ratio (as JDGnut explained)

Nice looking tractor Burns! I was wondering what size tires and rims (front and back) you have on it in the picture?

Thanks 50Man. Back are 14.9x38 Armstrongs (Nice aged set)on 14" rims bought from Wilson in OH.
Front are 5.00x15 3 ribbed (They earn there keep when I have up to 1300# on the front weight bracket alone.)

G-Man.. like Burns said.. the M&W style pistons will actually go past the spark plug hole, but the piston is notched for the plug... Burns machined his pistons down to get a desired compression ratio.. I left mine taller, because I know that I will soon remove the flathead.. I don't think that with the offset grind you will have to modify the pistons any.. If you do it only takes a few mins to cut out the piston, but you do have to remove it. The only think I am not 100% sure on the offset grind is the bottem ring.. the one below the pistons pin.. you will have to check ring to make sure it does not come out the bore at the bottom.. (I don't think you have anything to worry about.. you are only adding at the most .150 to the downward movement of the piston.) JDGnut
