Go diesel if you can afford the extra up front costs. Manual if you are a real control freak {like me ;o) }, otherwise, an automatic will usually return better fuel milage for most drivers. I run a 378 Pete with a 430 HP Detroit Series 60 and a nine speed. Pulling all my tractors at once is almost like pulling an empty trailer for it. About 6.5 MPG is it though, tops. My dad broke down and bought a 6.0 Powerstroke with the Allison in '03 and swears by it. Pulling two tractors plus a ton of weights it goes like you are just cruising with no load at all. The more miles he gets on it, the better the fuel milage gets. He is in the 20's now. Old Army bud of mine used a mid nineties F-250 diesel/automatic in his farrier business and pulling a 16 horse trailer with all his tools in the bed, he used to get 20-25 mpg depending upon how many hills he had to climb. These are both interstate driving figures. Another factor in favor of the diesel is durability. Pulling big loads is hard on any engine, and diesels are just plain built much more durable than gas sippers, period.

Almost forgot, (must be the age). Two wheel drive unless you just plain WANT a 4X4, or you plan on doing some heavy duty pulling around a farm in all kinds of weather or on the highway, again no matter the weather.

I use a 1979 GMC Astro 95 single axle road tractor to pull a 40"gooseneck. The truck only had 220k original miles on a 6V92 Detriot. I have the whole rig on the road for less than 1/3 the cost of a new pickup. The big draw back right now is fuel milage, it only gets about 5.5 miles to the gallon.

I have a 2003 2500 HD Chevy with the Duramax/Allison auto and I pull a 25ft gooseneck. I am normally hauling my 1206 which is 10500 pounds. I get 12 to 14 pulling the trailor and 21-23 on the highway empty (it is chipped-edge). If fuel mileage is a worry go diesel. Plus the power out of a diesel is no comparison to the gas trucks. I like the allison so far, it slows ya down in tow/haul mode, nice feature.

Just be careful, they dont stop on a dime.

Goodluck.

My 1995 F-250 Powerstroke gets 22 mpg hwy and about 15 hauling my gooseneck. It is a two-wheel drive with a five speed. I think a Cummins with a six-speed would be the best out there if you got the right gear ratio.

I like my Dodge high out put diesel with a manuel 6 speed, the rear end is a 3.55 (I think)on the road I get about 24.5 at 65 mph. back and forth to town I get 21.5. goose neck with 2 tractors and 4,000 lb weights I get 16+. for low buck go to the junk yard and put a antique to gether, custom build it and have fun with it, I had a 1946 2ton chevrolet with a ford 330 v8 5 speed trans.with a 2 speed rear. and it wasent bad on gas. I would not have a pick up with duel wheels. to many laws on them.

I would like to know what you did to get 16+ towing, not saying you don't,just would like to know how.I have a 99 3500 (dually, which handles the bigger loads better than the other 3 single wheels I have had,but thats only my opinion)cummins 5 spd w/edge chip empty 17-19 loaded 11-15 depending on the size of the load.
