Thanks to Burns and Irv, you guys stayed with my question. Yes my H is the old (39) low compression model. I want to pull in farm stock at local pulls, nothing serious, but I want to be competive. Last night I took the head off, and you guys are correct, there is a crater in the head big enough to grow potatoes in! No wonder it has low compresson. Can I do much for the engine by going the the fireball (?) pistons and milling the head down? How far can i mill it down?
Thanks for the resonse.
Dan

I know cheaters don't like to be called cheaters, but that doesn't sound stock. I know you want to blame the straight stock pullers for all the complaining and call us whiners, but if there weren't cheaters there probably wouldn't be as much whining. Now lets here how you cheaters can turn the tables and put the blame on us noncheaters. If you mistakenly said farm stock when you ment to say open class then disreguard everything I just said and please except my apology.

Hi Dan. I have a friend who used the "Firepower"
pistons with the low compression H head, and the most he could get out of the engine was 30 HP. I used to pull an H with the 350 sleeves and pistons and a 350 LP head. It put out 46 HP. The
LP heads are getting hard to find. Didn't cost
much to get the block bored. $11.00 a hole, but
that was about 8 years ago. If you keep your low
compression head and go with the 350 sleeves and
pistons, you would probably get about 35 HP.
If you use the 350 pistons, and a head off an Super H, 300, or 350, you get 40 HP. Just remembered something; If you do use the 350 pistons, you will need some special piston pin
bushing. Just tell the IH parts man that you have
a 300, and that you need the bushing for using the
350 pistons with the EARLY 300 rods. Don't even
mention H! Been there, done that, got the parts man all confused. The H, Super H, and early 300
rods are all the same. Durring the production of the 300, IH went to an aluminum piston with a
smaller wrist pin. Also, you should get a manifold off a Super or 300 or 350, if you go with
to match the bigger ports of the heads off a Super or 300/350. Anyway, good luck and have fun! ..... Irv

I am not sure what type of hp gain you would see by going with the rebuild kit. It will cost you about the same for a rebuild kit for an H as it would be for a 300 or 350. You would have the cost of the machining to allow for the larger sleeves. I would be cautious with the milling of the head. I had a friend that milled only .030 off of his M head but little did he know that the previous owner had already milled a bunch off. He ended up needing a new head. Sorry I can't help more. I work more on Deeres but I would suggest going to the Farmall forum here or going the Red Power forum. The link is below.

Several years ago we did a H we pulled the sleves and bored the block and installed 806 .060 over pistons rebushed the rods instaled a 350 head and manifold tweeked the carb and dist, it made good power never dyno'ed it but it would knock the sockes off of some of the best M 's in the area.
