Hauling Pullers Propane Alternative

I was talking to a good friend down in MO and he mentioned he just filled up his furnace LP tank for $1.50/gal. With diesel skyrocketing, could propane be a cost advantage? I know state vehicles, service trucks, and even motorsports using LP. With a conversion kit, would a Chevy 350 or 454 old carbureted truck be an alternative in hauling? Even maybe converting older cars over for transpotation purposes? Maybe MM had the right idea back in the 1940s -haha. The pulling forum is all great motorheads so lets see what you think.

Fewer mpg with LP. Payback to the break even point can take years. Sharpen the pencil 1st.

We have a two trucks for the farm that hauled propane also ran on propane ones a 1989 chevy C70 and a 1996 Chevy Kodiak, the C70 we put a carb and fuel tank back on, done this about 4 years ago. The Kodiak we are just about done building the new box and was ready to put the fuel injection back on but we may just keep it propane!! Propane at a station here is $1.79,

Yeah, they always have to have their cut. A good emergency plaan would be a gas tax elimination during crisis!

Much as I hate the price, don't do that. I work for a Michigan road contractor. The state needs that money, because, as you know, our roads suck. Plus, I need a paycheck...

He didn't say that he worked for the roads commision. His statement was "I work for a Michigan road contractor" which means that he contracts with the DOT for highway work.

Ever suggestion for cutting the cost of gasoline affects the economy negatively. Like it or not the economy is like the laws of energy. There is only so much money out there and when you reduce the cost of something to put more money in your pocket something else will suffer. Less gas tax equals less funds for new highways and the maintenance of the ones we have. It also equals less contracts given out to private contractors which will eliminate jobs. So after the fuel tax cut, some guy who doesn't have a job will pay several cents a gallon less for gas that he now can't afford at any price!

We had a 454 on lp years ago. It did very well, had lots of extra storage for fuel could go 800 miles before fueling. Only down fall is filling up on weekends or afterhours.

I've been thinking about the same thing. I think spotter is right; in time, LP will go up too. I had my 500 gal tank filled today at 1.29,(farm rate for tractor fuel). I've thought about building a 454 or 460 with high compression, high flow aftermarket heads, a big intake and maybe headers. LP would love a set up like that and make a lot of power.

Propane being a by-product of the refining process in the "early days" was simply burned off. They'd give it to you if you had a way of "capturing" it. The winter heating season will bring propane prices up as the demand increases and you'll see the price for it in the $2.50 range. The commodity traders have blown everything out of proportion with regard to supply and demand.

It is not so much the world supply as it is the capacity to refine and get product to the public. We have been warned of this for the past twenty years. "We need more refineries" but conservationists have fought new refineries just as they have fought drilling in those "pristine" areas of Alaska. It's about time our "gutless" politicians stood up and told them where to stuff those "pristines" and start sucking up "black gold" instead of just "sucking up" for votes...That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it...Spotter

I agree 100% wholeheartedly. Someday I will have a LP gas pulling machine. MM engines were designed for it. I didn't know that it was ever burned off as a byproduct. I do know it yields octane, good power, little engine wear, and very clean. I camp and ride trail bike near where they are drilling and pumping in Michigan. The area is extremely beautiful. The wildlife is plentiful in that area too. Coyotes, fox, turkey, deer, birds, and now bear and big cats (ouch). I even heard of some groups that do a cross country trail and camp with antique tractors. That's the life I tell ya.
