A buddy of mine has a 46 JD A, slant dash, long hood. He's doing a major cube build, and wants to get as light as possible. He's at 4500 now and wants to get to 4000, any suggestions? Thanks

Oh, what exactly does "major cube build" mean? 500, 600, 700, 800?

Took one of these "B's" out Sunday and won the 4500# and 5500# classes. To name a few models it was ahead of were: (2) John Deere "A's", Oliver 77, Farmall M, Farmall H, Allis WD45, Massey Harris 44, Farmall 400 and others. Sure hurt me to have to beat these fine tractors with a 1938 unstyled "B" John Deere!! Just had to share this information. DW

New Vienna, Iowa September 11 Benefit Pull. I got the two first place trophies to prove it. I am sure the committee still has the distances recorded somewhere. Good clay track, with plenty of bite! Double Trouble had her tongue hanging out in the 5500# class but it did spin out the 14.9 X 38" tires before it ran out of steam. We ran the long weight bracket with eight weights way out front and carried the front high at the end of the track. DW

what exactly is a "major cube" build? it may be hand startable, and dropping the starter, generator, and the heavy electric start will gain ya, a good hot mag is nice, although i have seen a stock B hand started with a distributer.....amazing..haha....

A 4000lb slant dash is a piece of cake..... ..sheet metal rear cover, conduit seat post, conduit steering shaft, weld on hubs, cut axles as short as possible, lightweight steel rear wheels (alu would be 30 a wheel plus tube lighter yet), 2 lb radiator, conduit radiator lines, no fan shaft, dont get stupid and overbuild wheelie bars, chuck whole front end and build a wide front and make sheet metal piece to go between grills, get rid of main gas tank and use 1 gal starting tank. There are two different flywheels, one is 30lbs lighter. You can also chuck the pto gears in the bottom of the tranny, but you can get by without doing that PITA job. Lose atleast half the rear end oil. Driver weight comes into play too. Im sure I forgot something, but thats the main stuff.

A friend of mine pulls a "45 Slant Dash A, and has removed the PowerTrol, pressed tim rims all around, homemade drawbar, homemade air cleaner, with electric start and he just barely makes 4500#. We have looked the tractor over and decided the best thing would be to lighten the front end, home made radiator (add coolant pump)and replace the front pedestal, maybe with one from an H or a B, also need to make the weight brackets easier to remove. But not sure how much these changes will cut the weight.
As far as the guy with Super C, we will take it on any day with our Oliver 77 in the 3800# class.
