Did a little experimentation this past weekend while pulling my '52 Super M. I wanted to get more RPM out of the engine so I went to the hardware store and bought a #166 spring to replace the stock governor spring. I got a ton of RPM with the #166 spring, but my base idle was way too high. I adjusted just about everything I could to get the idle to decrease, but she was still screaming. I pulled with it anyway. My question is if there is a better spring that will give me my desired higher RPM for puling, but also a decent idle? I have read about the springs that ChadS offers, would one of his springs give me what I'm looking for?
My SM has the 2 weight governor on it.

The spring you have is too short, give it a few more wraps for length, that should get your idle rpms down to par. You cannot adjust it to get the idle back down when the spring is too short. Chad

Thanks, Chads,
I put a # 167 spring in the Super M which got my idle back to normal, but I also didn't have as many RPM's at full throttle. I will have to put a tack on it to see where I'm at. All I'm looking for is around 2,000 RPM full throttle with a stiffer spring that won't let the governor shut down as easily as the stock spring would.

How many rpm is a 60-year-old factory cast-iron flywheel good for???

Ain't that the truth!! I have seen a 1466 cast her withers in the mid section; with the factory iron flywheel. It looked like a bomb went off. It was merely idling at about three grand while being fueled. The owner ONLY lost part of a foot.

I really like the RPM limits on antique pullers. There was a renegade M out here in upstate NY years ago, turning around three and a half to four grand. Never blew; but I never wanted to be very close when it was screaming.

Not all of the jeanyuses need RPMs to scare ya GMAN. We had this one crew of rocket scientists who were builing the all time killer JD A for pulling. (You're gonna love this) They were trying to CHAIN wheel weights to the flywheel, in order to build enough stored HP (energy) to scream down the track. Fortunately, they always seemed to run out of Budweiser before they got it perfected! best, Phil

Don't know exactly what he used, but my dad's cousin used a bedspring. With 15.5 tires the M would run 30 to 35 mph down the road.

you might try a 167 it is 1 or 2 coils longer which will help slow down the idle. I have used both successfully.A ccording to the dimensions he posted acouple years back Chads spring is identical to one of them so it should work although it is 20 some bucks.I suspect you have a bind or maladjustment in the internal linkage.
