Just returned from super pull in columbus and noticed something that does not seem right. the brown sled (dew sled)was not consistant in the way it reacted to the pull each time it was dragged down the track. when the weight box was moved to the top of the sled and could not transfer any more weight, then two rubber covered air bags or cylinders were activated at the rear of the skid pan,and the puller would come to a halt. the air bags or cylinders would push down on the skid pan and bring the tractor to a halt almost immediately. What i noticed was that the air bags were not consistant, when the weight box reached the end of its travel..the air bags sometimes did not kick in for several seconds. Sometimes it would only be one or two second interval, but other times it went as high as eight or nine seconds.I watched two tractors in paticular that i had pulled against in other pulls, and was surprised at how far one pulled over the other because they usually are very competive. When i got home i looked at the videos of the pull and sure enough the winning tractor had a longer interval of time before the air bags or cylinders kicked in. Something is not right and if any of you pullers in ohio get the opertunity to hook on to the "dew sled", then watch its operation. If someone can explain why this sled reacts like this i would like to know. I really think all the pullers that hooked on that sled did not get a fair shake and i have the videos to prove it.I am not a dis grundled puller, I came as an observer and could not believe what i was watching.the other two sleds seem to be consistant all the time. Thank you, NY puller

We pull Dews sled quite often year round & have never had or heard of a problem either. Seems odd that a "spectator" thinks theres a problem when no one pulling thought so. Armchair pullers always know it all. Their always right & can prove it.[NOT!!!!!] They must never have track changes or pullers move wts. in their area if 2 pullers are always right together.[When you have the numbers per class we had last wk. end theres bound to be changes.]

I've pulled the Dew Sled quite a bit, and have never heard another complaint about that sled by anybody, even the chronic complainers.

Dewey is a class guy, and does his best to make sure everything is fair. I have pulled a lot of sleds, and Dewey ranks right up there at the top.

Any one that knows Dewey, knows that he is one of the fairest people around. He takes great pride in his sled being fair, and the same for everyone. We at COATPA pull this sled all summer, and have never had any problems.

dewy hetzel would be the last person in the world of tractor pulling to play favorites. i don't know the particulars of how his sled operates but i am certain he was doing it fairly.

I'm thinking what Dewey might possibly be doing is he picks out a mark on the track (ie post, cone or some sort of marker) and at that point he applys the air to the back of the pan, just a thought

At 4 mph (is this a good speed for that particular class?) the delay of 8 or 9 seconds that you describe would be a distance of nearly 40 feet. Are you sure that a: you are accurately timing the delay or b: You have the same vantage point for each trip of the air bags?

NY, I don't know about that particular sled but I think they are using brakes, operated by the sled operator, just to get the pull stopped. After the sled weight has fully transfered, the tractor has made a "full pull" & he could just keep going at that current speed until he runs out of room (or gas). To save "track time", the sled operator hits the brakes & halts the motion.
