The tractor club I belong to has seen a dwendling participation of pullers and the tractor club is running borderline in finances. We would like to attract more pullers. All you pullers out there, can you give me input as to what you look at or for in the places you choose to pull such as track surface, trophies, prizes and etc. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

One thing that SMTPA started is farm stock where you can bring any tractor no matter what year 1900 to 2005 it really got the fan attendance up and pullers. We still have antique but if it weren"t for farm stock we would be in trouble. It"s nice because. These boys really know there tractors. There not like antique"s sitting in the shed all week and then go to a pull now and then. Alot of these boys spent more time on there working tractors then anywhere else so it gives them more pride to go out and win on the tractor that is putting food on the table. Also truck pulls we have it where you can bring your every day truck and pull it to. All the people that can"t afford to have a pulling tractor this gives them a way to be part of the show to and the more people in the pull the more hooks the more money. If you wanna see how it"s done come to The Smokey Moutain tractor pulling association where in Greeneville TN we usually have two pulls a month up till the first of Nov.HOPE TO SEE YOU SOON

we get 20 bucks a hook. we allow 100 lbs as well 100 lbs aint gonna make htat big of a difference. you can try attracting like the atpa etc they put on the show but then you sort of lose the local boys. usually you can make a pretty good deal if the atpa is running there at night etc to run the local boys during the day and them at night get pretty good sled rates. some people follow the atpa so maybe attendance will go up if you charge for attendance.

few rules I don't see any reason to confuse things (I was at a pull 2 weeks ago and fenders were an option on a friends tractor and a lot of the people there knew it, but the guy running the show said he could only pull exibition in stock class due to him not having the paper work with him. I lot of people complain about that guy running that show and all his rules), sticky track, $10 hook fee, organized order at staging (just someone to say line up 3500 now, ok you can go on the track now and can answer basic questions about how we are to stage), someone that can set up the sled so a reasonable amount of the pulls for each class make it to the 200'-225' area, reasonably priced cheeseburgers and sodas. Most importantly that I feel welcome and like I am around folks that are friendly.

Jonfarmer,
Ask your local pullers! Not just one or two but fifteen or twenty of them. Those fellers will be glad to give you their opinion of whats right and whats wrong with your pull.I know it takes alot of time, money and a whole group of committed people to put on a pull to benifit a local club, fire company,FFA chapter or whatever. But what you have to remember is that most pullers that I know also spend alot of time and money and take a great deal of pride in their tractors and towing rigs. All that said, as a puller if you are not happy with the rules and/or conditions of any given pull and the promoter isn"t open to constructive critisim then the only recourse that you have is not to support it. IT"S SUPPOSED TO BE FUN SO DON"T DO IT IF YOU ARE NOT ENJOYING IT!! If enough pullers agree with you then the pull either changes or folds. I believe that time will tell in regards to the Delta PA. pulls. Ask your pullers Jonfarmer they will let you know!
Best Regards,
Big Slim

No, it is the track. I did contact some of the pullers and they said it was the track. I have pulled myself on it and I have gotten small grooves cut in my tires off that crushed stone.

If the pullers are messing up their tires on your track, then your club shouldn't expect them to come back.(Maybe running the other pullers off is what some of your club members want, so it's just a hometown select few pull). Your club either has to fix the track or stay as you are and keep losing money. Or raise the hook fee for the few that do pull there. Most places charge $10, 15 or 20 per hook, depending on the club and overhead costs. Tires are a big money item to pullers.

That's what you want everyone to say when they leave your pull... If they feel welcome, and important.. they will come back... When everyone starts complaining, and griping... I'm not going back to that pull... The track surface.. some like it a little loose.. some like it tight.. you won't please everyone.. and everyone has to pull on the same track.. its the same for everybody... Everybody have a good time... its more about friends/family and pride than the 7-8 trophy... Oh.. and braggin rights... JDGnut

I have heard pullers like clay tracks, is that true?, or is there a better track surface?. We got a $7 hook fee, rules aren't too bad, but we try to keep it fair for everyone, so no use of TA's during the pull, drawbar no more than 20" high max, and no more than 36" long. You are allowed to be up to 100lbs over. Starting next year, there will be a 3mph speed limit in stock classes, open classes, just about anything goes. I think we have a very nice pull, nice roomy place to pit and unload, nice people, reasonable food and drink, bathroom. I pretty much know what the problem is, we have a crushed stone track, finely crushed, but there is sharp edges that cut up tires when you spin on it. I wanted more input though before I go to the board of directors on getting changes made. We need a new track!. I know there are alot of pullers on the area because they attend other pulls nearby, but not ours anymore.
Thanks

thats mostly what I pull on. And I'll tell ya what you must have a real good clutch and drop a couple gears going from rocky dirt to clay. Clay is the ticket, I think. But the thing with no TA use. I like my TA. It came on the tractor it is stock so why not use it??? Just a thought

Don't you think it would be quite unfair to the others who don't have a TA?. Thats why we have a rule against the TA being used during the pull, you can either have it on the high or low side, but don't move it once you start pulling or face disqualification. Open class you can use you TA.

we'll I guess. I have never heard of the rule before. I guess it would make everything pretty even then. Where I run at in WI there is alot of 300s 450s 460s 560s 9 and 1066s and very little others besides some strong Gs and As and a MM. So we really like the cheater stick.
