I have a 630 that I pull div I and II with and also use for light work around the place. I still use the points and condenser ignition sys. and was interested in some opinions on the electronic conversions on the market. Also if I were to pull at a natpa pull is that legal? This tractor has been changed to 12v neg with an alternator on it. Thanks

j rod, the electronic ignition becomes more necessary when you run very high compressions and exotic fuels. I agree with the good G Man they still improve performance in general, as they allow for the discharge of more energy across a usually wider plug gap resulting in a increased duration, wider, fatter, hotter spark of more surface area to better ingite the fuel. If I were pulling, I would DEFINITELY use one and coupled with a high performance high energy coil to get the bang for the buck (over a stock coil) that elec switch was designed for.

John T Nordhoff in Indiana, retired electrical engineer, usually lurks on the Mother Deere board.

I believe the NATPA rules say that electronic ignition is okay for the lower divisions if it's one of the simple electronic pickup units, i.e. a Pertronix setup. But no MSD boxes until the higher divisions. Go to their website to make sure. I've installed several of those setups in Deere New-Gen tractors, and I wouldn't say that they added horsepower. There's not a lot to be gained over properly dwelled points in good condition as far as power. But they do allow you to open up your plug gap a little, and they seem to really help starting and throttle response. Well worth it to not have to worry about points and a condensor, in my opinion, especially in a working tractor that doesn't spend all its time on a pulling track.
