What is the best way to cut or punch a copper gasket out? I really don't want to pay the $300. that they want for a design fee and $90. for the material. Any thoughts? Thanks

Make friends with a toolmaker. Most of us in the toolmaking trade have our own shim dies for punching out just such thin material. Places like Penn Tool, Wholesale Tool, Granger, and McMaster Carr offer shim dies at a reasonable price, but not as good as a home made one from a toolmaker.
hope this helps

I have done this little job about 10 years ago when it was harder to find parts than it is today. I made copper gaskets out of .062 soft copper that I bought from McMaster-Carr. I think back then you could buy a 2 ft. X 3 ft. pc.and I could make 2 gaskets out of that. Takes a lot of time, sharp drill bits, hole saw, jig saw, sharp blades, scribe, old gasket, files, welding clamps, drill press, and let the fun begin. I'll guarntee that you won't blow a head gasket. I never did anyway. Have fun!!!! deadeye

Call the folks at Lubbock Gaskets. I had a copper gasket made for a JD G for around $100 out the door. They have other materials avaliable besides the copper. If you have an old gasket or a pattern they can copy it.
