Alright fellas. The pulling season here in Wisconsin has finally come to a close. Our last pull, this weekend was a success… but its time to move up again as far as classes. (Open Antique to Turbo Farm). The G has been a great building project for me but its time to think about some new iron.

I have someone that is really interested in my G, one problem… the asking price. Here is what it is.

1938 JD G Jerrys 7.5 block and pistons Jerrys head
Jerrys manifold Carb by Detweiler
Fuel Pump: Holley Red
Fuel Tank: Auxiliary light weight chrome located in front Crank: 9.25 by Merfeild, 5020 Crank ends, 620 piston ends
Custom Crankcase Cover: Light weight aluminum with K&N crankcase breather Cyclone Electric Fan: Automatic turn on (thermostat) Ignition: MSD Box 6, with super coil. JD G Starter with reducer Tach: Tach by “Tiny Tach”
Styled Flywheel (balanced) Rear: 18.4X38’s Firestone Field and Roads (ground sharp, not cut), 16 inch rim Front: New this year
Light Weight Weight Brackets: Front, Mid, and Rear Light Weight Tip Bars: Fully adjustable

G has a lot of chrome (as much as possible). Great division 3 or 4 tractor. Ive never had the tractor on a dyno due to the fact of a bad experience prior to. It was build by a professional tractor builder (Detweiler Two Cylinder)

There is a lot more… but this is all I can think of. Ive got a lot into this because of the man hours, and pure money into parts.

Here is what I bought parts originally for (estimation):

G – 7000
Block and Pistons – 4500
Head and Manifold – 2500
Crank and Rods – 1000
Tires – 1000

This is just the big stuff. Let me know what you all think. I respect your opinion(s).

how much power appr. does that combo make? cant decide on a G or A for a puller. leaning towards the A because it is lighter. have you pulled it alot because I may have watched you before.saw a couple antique pulls in s.w. wis. this year that had a couple G's in them, also had a very strong A so it is making my decision very difficult.

HEY NEW PULLER in reply to new puller, 09-25-2005 19:17:40
we have a 1945 A John Deere A puller for sale It has a 9.25 Merfield crank Jerry's head and manifold it has very nice sheet metal It has weight brackets and wheelie bars. It had a 6.25 power block but the cam broke and busted the sleeve in the block. Might be able to fix??? We really would like to sell because we lost intrest. We also pulled it for about two years and it was very competetive. If you are intrested please call (615) 274-6898 or e-mail us at robinjacksoncpa@cs.com

Hey new puller, send me an e-mail, and I'll send you a pic or two of what I have for sale. Nicely done 662 cube unstyled A, none sharper looking and from most appearances looks stock, sort of...built big but strong!

I ran it quite a bit. I got thrown out of a pull (Lancaster Wisconsin)... and the last pull of the year my last run in the 6000 pound class I blew the left petcock right out of the tractor... needless to say, it didnt run as well after that happend. Threads were fine inside of it, lucky!

If I could give you advice, dont build one. Find one that is close to done like the A that is on here if you search "puller". You will save yourself quite a few dollars this way.

did you run at viroqa (sp.) ? there was 2 G's up at that pull and 1 of them was a very sharp tractor. I'm not going to spend alot on my first puller until I see if I like it. How much do you have to spend to make an A or ol88 competetive? sorry for all the ?'s.

Yup I did. I had the 18.4X38's... my grandpa had the one with the 14.9X38s. I had a loose connection on the battery that pull so at the end it started to sputter a little. I got second,... that damn 460 with the 806 motor in it got me. He also had a 20 inch draw bar and I had an 18. They didnt throw him out... politics!

so that was yours, very sharp tractor. I can tell that alot of work went in to it. who had the A that won the heavy class? do you know what he did to that? He won that by several feet. I am going to tell people about your tractor. have you decided on a price?

My guess would be between 8-10,000. I think(my opinion here) that you are high on the tractor cost, if you did pay that much, why turn it into a puller? Second, Jery's heads and manifolds run about 16-1700 as a pair. Road worn rears won't cost 1000. If you paid this much, you got ripped off. Remember, just my opinion, but your tractor sounds nice, should be worth easily in that 8-10 range. I have a 37 A built up to the max without moving the cam and am asking 12,500, but then anyone can ask whatever they want. Whether you get it is another question! Good luck, wish I could have seen it pull!

7000 for the tractor was the actual price. The tractor is perfect as far as looks and tin... im talking perfect, nothing wrong. It was a puller when I got it... nothing like I have it. It had a honed and refinished flat head, 6 3/8" bore and pistons, 18.4x34 FireStone 23degree new rubber on the back.

The reason I turned it into a puller was that I did it without killing it. I put a 3inch alu. block spacer in. In my area that is ok to do. This tractor could be taken back to stock without a problem.... I even have the original crank and rods, pistons and block, and head... and carb.

The tires and not road worn, they are road worn and ground/cut perfect. They are/ were also on alu. rims.

I was thinking in the area you are talking for yours...

Haha, it ran/ runds really good. It would hack 4th no problem in 5000, and 5500. 3rd in 6000.... and thats with 18.3x38's. I was always able to spin it out, except for on occasion... hard sticky clay wet track, what a hook.

Thanks for the input keep it comming!

o.k. didn't know they were on aluminums. Out of curiosity, weren't you the one a few mos. back who was figuring on building an 1100 cube G? Someone using the same name posted on that. Just wondering if that was you or how you figured on doing it. 1000 is tough, and having it hold together....reasonably. Just wondering.

Just check out the tractor first and who built what parts, and open up the top to look at the crank , just get info first on all about the tractor well pay off in the end, my 2 cents,
