Check out this ling and what they say about HD800 Molines. Their torque number is way off in the ad, but they love that engine in the pump world.

Yeah, I think I had looked at that before.

Torque should be 600 lb.-ft. to make 200 horses at 1750. There's no doubt that those old Molines are good engines, and I've never said otherwise, but they're murder on fuel, and that's a fact. A 200-hp diesel of just about any brand would burn way less fuel. There's a few HD800s around here, but most of the M-Ms are 605s and smaller. Some run on propane in portable tanks, and the rest are hooked right into the natural-gas lines. I'd like to see prices on those remans, also, as I'm betting they're pretty darn spendy.

Yeah, diesel will always be more efficient than LP. The old LP tractors ran pretty efficiently in power for the buck, but diesel really took off later. 605 engines can be picked up pretty cheap, but HD800 remans are pricey. A loose complete HD800 will bring $2500 and I"ve seen the rebuilds bring over twice that. I love the old 403 and a 605 was two more cylinders...oh boy I"d love to have one in that GB but I am sticking to a hot diesel for it. Did Deere sell 2-banger diesel and LP power units? It would seem that a Deere popper diesel would be an efficient machine.

Deere sold the "W" power-units CP mentioned, in a couple different versions if I remember correctly. They were also selling inline power-units during the same time period the two-cylinders were produced, in the later years. In those days, fuel-economy wasn't nearly the factor it is now. Most fuels were dirt-cheap compared to todays prices. Even compared to prices 10 years ago.

Deere sold a "W" series power unit. It was an R series tractor engine on a skid I believe. They didn't seem to sell very well. Maybe G-man could explain why?

They sold well enough to stay in production for a number of years, and were dead-nuts reliable, just like the tractors they "came out of". Last I checked, most wells are shaft-driven with a vertical gearhead, not belt-driven. There ARE a few belt-driven wells around here, but not many.

The "W" engines were from a D not an R.

You guys need to grow up and take your personal disputes elsewhere!

I forgot they were gas and, D not diesel and R. I was referring to G-man to answer the question because I am sure he knows it. As for me growing up, I don't plan to. Our personal dispute goes back about as far as the hatfields and McCoy feud. We usually keep it on the Bashing Board, but G-man likes to take pokes where he can, just as I do. If you don't like it, don't read my posts. Yes, it is that simple.

If it wasn't a good design, no one would be using them or buying reman ones, seeing how they haven't made them in 25 years. I am not even a Moline man and would take a nice 504 Case power unit if I had the choice, but have to admit that Moline could build , or I should say, overbuild an engine!

I don't know much about Case, but have respect for those big old engines. Maybe not as interchangeable as M-M, but good looking big slow old luggers! I'd like to see more Case out there pulling.
