My buddy's girlfriend would like to start pulling, but she is a Deere girl. I know Deere can pull well, but require more work and $ to compete than say a Chalmers or Moline. What would be the best and cheapest way to get a Deere that can compete in basic speed limit or barnyard classes. What model?

Novice: I pulled a 47 B with nothing more than a Powerblock and creeper gears for years. Could run 2nd gear in 3500# on almost any track, and wouldn"t run out of power in 1st up to 5000#. Keep her in 3500# and 4000# and you can be competitive most of the time. (top 1/3)

I Pulled in a 5500# OPEN class just for fun. No RPM limit, no Speed limit. Course I pulled low gear. Had to borrow weights (only planned on pulling 3500 and 4500) chained to the axles, frame and weight brackets. Got 10th out of 30+ tractors and carb linkage came off at the end of the track and it went to idle...oops.

For a beginner tractor, I"d shy against the A, There"s too much competition up in the 4500# and 5000# classes. Not to say that there isn"t competition at 3500 and 4000 but there"s limits to the HP you can stick on the track at 3.5 MPH and usually there"s not as many tractors in 3500 and 4000 as 4500 and 5000.

I agree with Jak a 1950 or older A is a great beginner tractor, that is cheap to set up to be very competitive, also if you want a little lighter tractor a 1947 or later B with the straight 6 shifter will do very well with pressed steel wheels you can start in the 3600lbs class.
Just a suggestion

Get a 1950 or later model A with the six speed gear box and get right with it.Put some pressed steel wheels on it and she can pull several classes.
