I may be dropping a M-M U down to 4500# and was wondering if 15.5 x 38 would still be a good tire in that light of a class. I notice narrow tires are able to get a better bite in light classes while many balloons just float along on top. Couldn't a more agressive angle to the tread make a wider tire hold on too? Remember this is for speed limit class, not open. I'm just wondering if a good 13.6x38 would be good on my 85h.p. (guessing) UTU in 4500# class.

The one tractor I have I pull in the lighter classes, 5000 down to 4000 and it done very well with old hard very road worn 15-5-38's on 14" rims but I kept it under 45 HP. I'm building more HP engine for the tractor so I changed to 14-9-38's on 16" rims and have no idea how this combo will work. I sold my old tires and wheels to a friend of mine who pulls 4000 to 5500 with his under 45 HP tractor. I didn't play at all in 2005 with the lighter tractor but my friend done very well with his tractor and my old tires. When I say tractors done very well I mean in the top 4 spots 99% of the time. I have about 7 friends that pull in the lighter classes 3500 to 5000 and the tire sizes are mostly 15-5. We have good luck with this size. We have tried 13-6 and a couple of skinny sizes and couldn't get them hook for us. We don't run cut's in the classes we pull. I have been involved in pulling and pulled for about 40 years and the best answer for any question comes from trial and error and watch to see what wins. There are a lot of good people who will give you good advice and help anyway they can, they are your winner's even if they don't pull. Good luck and I hope the info I gave can help.

Are you running cut tires or uncut?? In our Div III 4500 class (cut tires) the ones that are consistatly winning are using 18.4X34 or 38's. On really hard tracks (black marks where you spin out) the smaller tires seem to have an advantage. Don't have ant experience running big tires in a 4500 lb uncut tire class. Mike

Can you run a 14.9 or a 16.8 in that weight class. I'm not sure of your club rules. 15.5's are a low profile tires. 14.9's and 16.8's are taller tires. With tallers tires you will get more tire on the track, per revolution, compared to the 15.5's. I pull with a JD G with 15.5X38 and wish I have 14.9's or 16.8's because I always run out of traction. Just my suggestion, I'm still a newbie at this tractor pulling.
