Hi guys, I got my main case and rear end stripped, cleaned and primed. I'm trying to get my ducks in a row as far as my engine goes. I ordered M&W pistons today - .125 over. The guy I talked to thought the compression ratio would be in the 6.5 to 1 range - does this sound right? I asked about high-comp pistons and he said this was the only one available. With my offset-ground crank and A rods what will my comp ratio be approximately? I was hoping it would be a little higher than 7 to 1. Maybe in the 8.5 to one range. The guy didn't sound real knowledgeable and I know there's people on here that are. I would appreciate any input on this subject - G-MAN.

If the cylinder walls will clean-up at 45 or 90 over the extra displacement of 125 won't even show on the dyno but will make the engine run hotter. Power blocks & stroking is where the power exists. Head and intake/exhaust is vital, all those cubes "breathing through a straw" is lost HP. Oversize valves & blending edges out of the ports with a 3" exhaust does wonders along with a cam.

G-MAN..you would have 7.8 to 1 with the offset grind..take off .050 off both the head and block and you will get 8.5..i don't think the g i did years ago had 6.5..guess maybe around 6 with the .125 over..measure and compute out when going back together..lynn

Gman.. 6.5 to 1 is right for the high compression pistons.. factory compression is about 4.5 to 1. I have been doing some calulating, and measuring.. I'll email you what I figured out. I took my parts to the machine shop today, they should be finished at the end of the week. About 3-4 weeks before all is installed. JDGnut

If you want to raise the comp-ratio put a unstyled head on a styled block with the high top pistons.

An unstyled A head will ONLY fit a unstyled or '39 block. Only G heads will interchange. He would have to find heisler head.

We are talking about my '48 "G". I am not interested in putting a flat head on it, and there are no Heisler heads for "G"s. If my compression will be 7.8 to 1, that will be good enough. I want to drive this tractor and not have to spend $4 per gallon for fuel. Thanks for all the info.

For some reason I got A JD's on the brain. I was responding thinking of A's. There were no heislers for G's like you said, and I can appreciate you not wanting to go the knocking and pinging route. I ran a flat head with high compression pistons for about a year. Bought 3 head gaskets too.
