I am starting to build my John Deere G for division 3. I thought about 9 3x8 stroke and .250 bore. How hard is it to put in and what has to be ground to fit? Would it be competitive, also how much horsepower would it have? Any other combinations that would be better let me know. What year head is best?

How successful and competitive you are is going to depend in large part against who and what you're pulling against.

9 3/4 crank is common and fairly easy. You have to cut two holes in the back and clearance the top of the case. Maybe a little on the back of the cylinders. Your crank guy can make your rods and mill your cam for clearancing. The late head (cyclone) is fine for this set-up. The head is cheaper and you can make your compression with the rod length. Since you're not using a Power Block it will make Piston Configuration/Making Compression a lot easier if you have your plugs put in your head and bring the piston past the old plug holes.

Boy, he makes it sound so easy, just a little more to it than that. The actual work is a little more frustrating...Either size motor would be o.k. for D-3, but you won't be consistently near the top of the class. The competition is pretty tight at this level, on any given day, basically anyone could finish at the top. Remember, everyone else has done what you have, or more. Alot depends on what weight you pull in. G's generally don't do that well in 5000-6000, generally speaking. Now the 7500 is mostly G's, but then they are around 850-900 cubes, or more yet. It is a money game for the most part. The main thing to remember is do what you can afford, be happy with what you end up with, and the people you will meet and make new friends with will be more appreciated than the power you will get from your tractor. Cheaper to make friends than to build a top tractor. My only recommendation would be to use a Jerry's head and manifold, otherwise you're on the right track. Ask alot of questions also, those generally don't cost much either.
