Hey All! Hope everybody is ready for Christmas. I'm not. I have a C175 block that has a chunk broken out of the #3 bore wall. It's facing the #2 barrel. I'm pretty sure this block is NFG unless I get aftermarket sleeves put in.

Wondering if anybody here has done this and would mind explaining how they did it. Would like to find out how big I can go if I have to bore the barrels out completely.

Thanks to all that can help and happy holidays to all!

Cheers!

Sid

Ive got one like that,,, Hole in #3 too! Depends on how big you want the bore to be,,, and how thick of sleeve you should have. Yes, you can have the broke sleeve bored out, but it may tick off your machinist doing so,,, Once they start boring, pieces start breaking out and can break off the tool on the boring bar if it catches, But, sometimes you get lucky and it holds together long enough to bore it out. Think of a thick repair sleeve, if they get the broken part out, they dont have to bore the entire block out,,, just inbetween the breaks to leave room at the top and the bottom to press in a repair sleeve. if they do a good job, it may, or may not leak water into the crankcase,, Chad

Hey Chads! How ya been? I was thinking about boring out all 4 barrels and having 4 new bigger sleeves installed. I would run the pistons on those new sleeves (sleeveless). Maybe end up with 4", 4.25", or 4.5" bores when the new sleeves are installed. End up being a wet sleeve engine. What do ya think?

Cheers!

Sid

Sid, things have been going well! Id stay conservative,, When going out to larger bores that require sleeves like this, over time, they can expand and contract, next thing you know, its leaking, or break, and you have to do it all over again. There are alot of piston selections under 4 inch that work fine with strokers. The bigger the bore, the thinner the sleeves, or the more they have to bore the block out, and weaken the block deck. Ive got a 4inch+ 350 block that has been sitting still for bout 3 years now,, nice thick sleeves, BUT,, when we had those sleeves put in, the block deck is bored out so far,, the sleeves are actually into the head studs, Yeah, we can weld them in at the top, and hope it would hold up,, but it gets weaker when its welded, the surface becomes brittle and can break. If you stay under 4 inch, you have more block deck to help hold the sleeve in place, and can still have a thick sleeve, or maybe even run on the original block walls. Anyways,, my latest project is not a tractor this time round,, its an old ford, a 69 maverick, putting in a 5.0 to run around in during the summer. Ive got the engine set in, and getting ready to fire it up. I thought the 460H was a fun little conversion,, but this one takes a shoehorn that King Kong would have to use! Chad

Chad:The maverick fit is tight but they came from the factory with a 302 in 68. My brother had one.
