A fellow puller with a 1600 Oliver, and a Gingerich motor has blown more head gaskets than you can imagine. Plus, he's had water leaks so bad the top of his valve cover looks like bacon grease. Finally, one of the local engine builders here found a crack in the head that had been so called fixed with a pin and welding but was still leaking water. So, the owner of the Oliver got the local engine guy to copy the head, this time not a cracked and fixed head. He puts on the new head this time with a solid copper head gasket, starts her up, and we both watched steam start to come out from around the valves 3,5,and 6, then the exhaust looked like and did have steam coming out of it. Number one, is this normal with so many blown head gaskets, and number 2 has any one had leaks from solid copper gaskets. This man is at his witts end. Thanks

You may want to try and replace all of the heads tuds with new ones. A friend had a 77 that he couldn"t keep the head gasket in on a low compression engine. After checking everything else twice (two new head gaskets) he replaced the head bolts. The tractor has not had a problem since.

The idea of fire rings also could help a lot. If the motor is a new engine from Gingerich, I would call him and talk over the problem. Even if t is an older build up, he may be able to make some suggestions. On an older engine, it is quite likely that others have been inside the engine several times since it left Gingerich"s shop. In that case, your friend may be dealing with problems created by some one else.

Good Luck!

Is the block and head O-ringed and what kind of compression does it have. I would say have the block and head O-ringed with the copper gaskets. They seal up real nice with the O-rings in there. Thats my 2 cents.

If it's not o-ringed, doing so should solve any gasket blowing problems. They simply hold up 10x better when this is done. Also it's a lot more common for a copper head gasket to leak water than a standard, but they do hold the compression better.
