How is material added to cranks befor offset grinding them. I have seen one befor it was ground and it looks like it was Spray welded with a torch. I would imagine that the crank would have to be heated befor it was welded and alowed to cool slowly. Anyone know for shure?

we welded one up by stick weldin once...preheated it with a rosebud till it was 400deg. F....and then used some good hard rod..... tured out good..and ran for a few years..but broke the crank after the throttle shaft came out of the carb and it opend wide open..... ..bad deal....

we preheat the crank, then mig weld with a special wire. takes about 6 or 7 hot hours, they have all worked so far.

Kevin, Shops that do cranks right use a crankshaft welder (submerged arc). www.gleason.com is the # 1 system in my opinion. Then grind to about .040 bigger than finish size at that point they straighten the crank by (radius journal peening) Then finish grind Some people weld them freehand with stick. Some people don't do them right they lay pieces of metal across on the journal then weld around that for faster journal build up.
