I am overhauling the U-MM to do some stock antique pulling next year. I'm putting M-5 blocks on. The local Agco dealer found me some .030 over pistons. When they came they were n/o stock and cast iron. I have them paid for so I think I'm probably stuck with them. At best there will be a hefty re-stocking fee. How much less hp. will I have with these as compared to aluminum pistons? Thanks

be sure to check your part numbers and deck hieght. You may have older 403 pistons from a G/GB.

Joel. It takes power to push a piston. The heavier it is, you will lose some umph. Try pushing your tractor empty, then load it up with another 3000#. Your engine can tell the difference too. You have to stop that piston and then restart it at the beginning and ending of every stroke. If you are building a pulling motor, put the right piston in there. If you plan on stroking the engine, do you really want a big heavy piston slapping around in there? Remember that thing aboug having to bring the piston to a dead stop and then get it back going the other direction?

If they are the same comp ratio, they should make the same power, AND last Longer...!!! Ron..

Cast pistons add to recipricating weight which might affect how snappy the engine is,but at rated rpm's that isn't a big factor in an minnie . cast pistons don't scuff like an aluminum will so both materials have their merits and demerits. If it takes up the same space in the cyl. it will compress it the same.

Yes, they are the same compression ratio. I thought that due to the heavier weight of the cast iron pistons the weight of the rotating components of the engine would be heavier and might affect hp output in some way. Thanks for the reply.
