Building a header

Hey all! Wondering if any of you have built your own or have a tubular header on your Farmall pullers. I'm wanting to try and build one for my 350 powered '51 H. Looking for advice to find out if this is a good idea and what size of tube I should use for the intake and exhaust. I got the idea from OPP and got some good info from Wildman already. Wanting to see what others have done and have to say.

Cheers!

Sid

If you have a new or nearly new cast iron intake,
you can lay it out in sections that you can reach with your die grinder, cut it apart, port each part, and gas weld it back together with cast iron rod. If you can bolt or clamp all the pieces down to a good flat steel table that"s at least 1" thick as you weld the pieces back together and let it cool as slowly as possible, it will minimize intake flange distortion so that you can resurface it with a #180 sanding belt glued or stapled to a good straight 2x4(other than time and patience, probably the hardest part to come by) Good Luck,
Mel

If your going to run alot of rpm, it may help. Thats alot of air going into your 175,,, You can run a high hp H on that setup and have better results. Find a LP manifold for an engine like yours, Would be the best route. JMHO, Chad

Thanks for your input ChadS. I wondered if you'd jump in. I had to buy an aftermarket manifold when I origonally built this motor and all I can say is whatta piece of crap. Terrible casting. None of the ports were round or anywhere's close to being the right diameter. Way smaller. Had to spend a couple of days with the die grinder opening them up to match the head and gasket. If that's the way the manifold is on the outside, I can only imagine what it is like inside. Anything else has gotta be better . I have nothing to lose other than time and a little money in tubing and collector.

I was thinking of using 1 1/2" tubing for the intake and exhaust. Maybe I should load the ol'e H up and haul her down to you and see if your wrench's can get anymore out of her. Push'in 42 HP right now.

Cheers!

Sid

Remember, small runners build velocity, and it would be easy to lose power but flowing too much, for the RPM you'd run. I'd liike to try a Denny's intake and header, to see the difference versus something like a Hank Steel manifold at the same RPM...of course there is nothing around for an H, so I will continue to cut my 350 manifolds in half..AC ...get ahold of me, Sid...
