Combustion chamber shapes and styles

Im wondering on combustion chamber types which would be best? The first one has a .680 deep one in the head and the pistons .100 below deck to control compression. The other type has the pistons flush and a combustion chamber of 1.300 in the head. The first will have more compesion then the later. Piston size is 4 7/8. Some say the best is to have all the explosion in the head to have the best power ratio. Others say it doesn't matter any opinions are much appreciated.

A wedge head has a quench area and resists detonation and has good turbulence if the piston gets 60 or closer to the head. An open "hemi" combustion chamber is more prone to detonate, all things being equal. However the hemi shape allows larger valves. Pressure is pressure, no difference if the combustion chamber is in the piston or the head. You concern will be preventing shrouding of valves or spark plug and the flame front not having to turn corners or change direction. Go with the 2nd design and get the flat area of the pistons real close to the flat area of the cylinder head.40 thou is good with steel rods.

Which one will flow the Best..?? Valve sizes the same.?? Valve shrouding less on one or the other..?? Can you get the piston up to deck-height on the small chambered one..?? Torque should be about the same..all things being equal, but you get a cleaner burn with the piston at deck height..which ever head you use.. It is easier to rework and polish the shallower chambers to improve flow and reduce hot spots..

The shallow head will flow best. The combustion chamber is a little wider so they are less shrouded and has same valve size as the other. The problem is with the shallow head and pistons down i will have around 12.5 to one. So if i push the pistons up i will be way to high on comp. The other one i wont get over 9.1 to one with the pistons all the way flush. thanks

After you get done with the chambers..what would the compression be..?? The chambers get larger as you rework them.. Quench area is improtant for good combustion..

Even if you have to mill an area of the piston top to get a Quench area, I would do it.. Are there any dished pistons available..??
