I wonder if anyone has done this and how much trouble would it be to get one to work..(fit)..?? I would think the power would be about the same, and they can use the extra weight up front anyway. Exhaust could be underneath for a real clean hood.... I always liked my '80 Caprice V-8 Diesel....always got 30+ MPG..

Thanks..!

Ron..

One fellow here has one in his '51 JD "A"..

It has been in it for several years.. He claims it pulls 5x 14" plows easilly. Looks Great, and sounds Great...!!! My '80 Caprice wagon had much better power than the '82 Model and I never had any trouble with it. How much bigger dimentionally is the "6.5" and what would one cost (Good, Used)..??

The 5.7 GM diesels were supposed to be 105 HP which would be considerably more than the original engine.
As for these engines being junk, my family has driven 6 cars with them in for a considerable number of miles. We have had some problems with them, mostly after they had 200,000 miles on them. The reason we drove them is that they got over 30 MPG in fairly big cars that rode pretty well (Olds 98s, Malibu Wagons, a Bonneville & a Lasabre wagon). The 2 major problems we had with them were the drive ring in the injector pump falling apart and blowing head gaskets. We never had a head crack. The ones we drove were 1981-83 after GM made some improvments. I think the ones that had problems cracking heads were the early ones with the pencil type injectors (indentifyable by only one bolt holding the air clearner on). The problem you may have is finding one that isn't worn too much to run well. I have taken more than a dozen apart looking for a good block or a set of oversize pistons and haven't found either. The blocks have all been at, or very close to, the limit for allowable taper in the cylinders.

My dad bought a new 79 Scottsdale Chevrolet with the 5.7 diesel, had problems with finding clean fuel w/o water and always changing fuel filters.Warped the head at 50,000 miles, then right after that was repaired then the crankshaft broke.Found a 350 gas engine at a big salvage yard out of a sharp looking Olds 98 but had no rear from the back doors back(got took off by a train)The engine had only 12000 miles on it.For 100 bucks a guy took out the 5.7 diesel out and installed the gasser Olds and that was the smoothest running Chevrolet truck around. It had a different sound than other GM trucks and still used the factory dual exaust. We drove that truck for years after that trouble free.

You will be pretty much on your own on this one... I don't think you will find any conversion kits for something so un-wanted... here are a few quotes from the web that are my sentiments exactly... and I had one of these miserable engines in an olds...

"The GM 5.7l is without a doubt the worst diesel engine ever cobbled together. It is the Olds 350 gas block that was converted to diesel. Probably 99% of these motors have been blown apart for at least 10 years, but some may still be kicking around. If someone offers you one, they are NOT your friend."

"Its only since the Duramax came out 4 or 5 years ago that GM has had somewhat of a decent Diesel engine anyway, the 6.2L engine is probably THE worst Diesel engine EVER and the 6.5L was better by only a whisker."

"That GM converted diesel is known as the worst diesel engine ever made, offered in a production vehicle."

"After energy crisis the diesel powered cars had increasing sales but Oldsmobile went to build the worst diesel engine ever."

there are a lot of good diesels out there...but not that one....

I am a certified GM tech and I know the 5.7 was for the most part a pig in a poke, but I have owned a a couple of 6.2 and 6.5 diesels and they were great. I have heard the Ford guys brag about their Ford diesel but Ford did not put thier diesel in their trucks they used Internationals. Likewise Dodge used Cummins. My 6.2 was weak,no turbo, but my 6.5 was a workhorse. I have pulled like loads with Fords and Dodges and they could not outrun me. I would concider the 6.5 for my cnoversion. Look for a 1993 back and you're not bothered with trying to put the computer on the tractor. The only things you will need to have electrical is the shut off switch to open it and the lift pump to supply the injector pump. You will need to replace the pitcock valve in the fuel tank of the tractor with at least a 3/8" outlet.

I have a 6.2 in a 1983 3/4 ton with 200,000 miles on it. Got 25 mpg on the hwy last year. usually 20 around town. It is weak on power but not problems to speak of after years of abuse. It had a few glow plugs released in its day. I know folks had problems, but thought the 350 Olds diesel had a far worse reputation. My Powerstroke has a couple issues because I bought it beat up and used, but I love it! Cummins or Duramax someday.....

I have a 6.2 with almost half a million miles on it. They are very good engines. The 6.5 has some head issues. I have owned some 6.9 IH diesels and would only take one if I had a big boat that needed an anchor. The Old's coversion was junk, but to many people get it confused with the 6.2. they are a million miles apart.

Thanks for the clarification.. and the 6.2 was okay... I should have been more careful in my selection of quotes... however, I think that the 6.2 was about 1982/1983 and on, and the original post spoke of a 1980 vehicle which would have been the 5.7.... the engine that I had in the olds was a 5.7 also... If the GM diesel is a 5.7L/350 ci conversion, they got good mileage on the highway but where known for cracking the cylinder heads. Same thing with the 6.2L also. Also they did not have a ton off HP or torque. If you want a diesel look for one that has a better track record or put in a gas V8, More power and more torque. My .02 cents worth.
