There some differences,, First off, for a 4 inch M piston, The IH piston had a stepped head on it, that was simular shape to the firecrater,, but the dome was made to fit the M style compression chambers, Made good compression, which put the old M cam, and head to the limits as far as HP gains in stock form. So really, the high altitude piston enhanced the old 248. The firecrater, was a complely different setup,, They were changing the flow in these engines with piston design, and then followed it with a head and cam change, or upgrade when the Super M came out with the 264 block. Now granted,,, they still used the old M parts on the early super M's, But that was usually the head and pistons. They may have carried over the left over parts when the M model was stopped and SM's took over,, To get the most from firecraters,, you should have the entire parts which was designed for them. Late SM's, SMTA, 400, had the 264, With the new style cam, and head, and can be found with firecraters. For a M, Look for high altitudes,, maybe you can get lucky and still find a place that handles old IH parts, and find a set. Ebay, or a good salvage yard may have a good used set,, or go new, but you wont find a high compression like the old kits were. If you get lucky and find a set, change the cam while your at it. Put in a 450 cam, it will help, and you can have a good ol M. Tisco kits make 55 hp, the old high compression pistons made close to 60, but that was tuned up,, that was with a 8060 head. ChadS
