I have always run fairly stock tractors and I hope someone that knows more about this can help me out. I am putting a VA series case together. I have a engine from a 400 I am putting the internal parts in the VA. I need to know how to figure the cam grind I need?? Should I just take it to the machine shop and trust that they know. I am planning to take it to Robert Sox in South Carolina. I also need to know what I have to do to fit these parts in. I was told a 148 from a 300 would bolt in, but the 148 from the 400 I would just have to change the parts with minor machineing. What minor machine work needs to be done?? Jonathan

You have got to let the grinder know where you want the torque range to max out at. I.E. @2000
rpm.

You can call Lunati or someplace and see if they get all confused. They will also need to know the rocker arm ratio, maybe even the intake and carb size.

I certainly Hope your not going to try and pull this tractor in the stock classes . If your building up a tractor like that then have the balls to run with the big boys . The stock class is for beginers and those with limited funds that want to have fun and its not fun when a cheater blows your doors off.

I am not going to pull stock. I have been hording parts to build this VAH high crop with a narrow front. I didn't get a front with the VAH. I am planning to pull up to 3500# Super and hoping to build a tractor that weighs about 2500#. No cheater here!!!!! Jonathan

Hello Johnathan,
Think twice before using Sox, there are several from this area that have some bad experiences with his work. I'm not tring to begrade him but I would be careful. J.T. and Buddy Richardson in Burlington are grinding cams now and I 've seen some of their work and it looks good. I not really promoting them but they do good work.

still goining to pull stock????Seriously ,check with some other pullers, some machine shops don't realy know how to grind a tractor cam they work with P/U's and autos that rev somewhat more than you plan on. Makes a lot of differance. I think a person could do better with a shop welder and a angle grinder than some I've seen preform.
