Changing 1948 John Deere G... to a Flathead

Howdy fellers,,,,, ,
I am putting an F486R John Deere G flathead on my 1948 styled tractor,,,, and was wondering which John Deere gasket set to order,,, the one with the unstyled head gasket or the one with the styled head gasket,,,,,Or do you recommend another source to buy the kit from.

I'm not trying to build a killer machine, just gonna put that head on my otherwise all stock John Deere tractor. I'm pretty sure it hasn't ever been bored or anything else, and it seems in very sound condition.

other input is highly welcome for tips from you good ole boys that have been there n done that. I am totally in the dark here on this subject but I know a bunch of you have done it before.

Mentioned below.. Compression ratio... Everyone will have thier own opinion... Studs, push rods, carb linkage.. (or carb spacer) bend the oil line a little.. If you have problems with the head gasket there are a few things that can be done.. The flatheads are bad about flexing.. you can have a pin installed in the water jacket of the head to help with this... If you have flattop pistons, you won't have any problems.. if you have high compressions.. you'll be much happier HP.. but may see a little flexing.. (if the head hasn't been milled on much, you might not have any problems.) The last thing to look at is fuel... pump gas isn't going to cut it.. I've never used anything less than AV gas in that setup with High Compression pistons.. usually run C12.. (a little over kill) If you don't have High compression piston, you can run pump gas... Good Luck

the studs to bolt the head will have to be changed to shorter ones.

The styled gasket is right one to use with the 486 head. Make sure that you know what your final compression ratio will be after you install the head. It's possible your tractor was never bored or had the pistons replaced but not likely. If it has the original pistons in it, they will be cast iron and will top out at about an inch and a half from the top of the block at TDC. This is referred to as "squish-area" or block chamber volume. I would reccomend no less than 7/8's of an inch squish area...any tighter and you could have gasket problems and you will lose torque due to excessive compression. You may have to alter pistons accordingly. You will also have to shorten your pushrods about 5/8 inch. The best way to do this is by grinding.
