Hi.
I am a antique tractor puller in northern Minnesota, I have a John Deere G that I am building to pull in 6500lb class and heavier weight classes. Do I have to look at beefing up the differential in my tractor or will it be ok?

The tractor is bored and stroked to an amount that I shouldn't have to worry about powering out in lower gears. It has a factory head that has been flowed and a Johnson lp manifold to match the head. It has a camshaft to match the amount cubic inches that the motor is. I am going to be running 18.4x38 tires on 16 inch rims.
In the process of rebuilding the tractor to pull, I replaced the transmission bearings, the axle bearings and races, differential bearings and races, and first reduction bearings.

I had the three pins sheer off in my 46 GM a few years ago. I talked to a retired John Deere mechainc about that. He said that he had seen a few 4020's that had that happen. He adivised I replace the complete differential assembly, since it had slipped so far, and had me drill another hole half way between the existing pins just a shade smaller then the pins to be installed, and then drive the new pins in. The pins need to be a soft grade bolt and because the cast drills better, the holes will be more in the cast when your done. Thats been some years back, and no problem.

It sounds like you've done your homework pretty good in the back room of your G. If you plan on pulling it heavier than 8000#, I would reccomend welding the differental drive gear to the spider, just 3 1 inch welds on each side will do. The drive gear is fastened to the spider with 3 rivets from the factory and I have seen them shear on stroker tractors being pulled heavy. The differental is definately the weakest link in the G powertrain.
