Why was the SUPER MTA longer than a 450? I thought they were the same wheel base

They are the same. Also sheet metal from an M to the MTA is the same dimensions. The MTA gets its additional length in the longer torque tube that houses the TA. The sheet metal all went toward the front and there is a large gap between the back of the gas tank to the steering support tower.

Better get your tape out and measure some tractors. The SMTA hood is around 1 1/2 inch longer than M or regular SM gasoline tractors. The front bolster was changed and moved the vertical steering shaft and radiator around 1 1/2 inches forward compared to M , SM gas.The MD bolster were already made same length. So MD,SMD,SMTAD hoods are all the same length.

Is the main hood on the SMTA longer than the M? For weight loss, you mite be able to use the M front bolster, and pedistal, if the frame rail bolts are different, use the rails off an M. The steering hooked up basicly the same, and the power steering can still be used,, You would have to check to see if the steering gears are the same, or make one from a M. I was thinking the M-450 rail was the same length, just used different bolt patterns on the bolster, or maybe they are exact and interchange. But,,, power steering!! Gotta keep that. My H dont steer to well with 500+lbs of front weights sticking out there. Im thinking of how to put a 300 power steering on a H. 300 front engine cover, 300 live pump, and the 300 servo in the steering shaft, and hope, it fits under a H hood. And the live pump will be ok to run the power steering only. Too much pressure, or set it to match,, Can it be done? ChadS

Think maybe the MTA wheel base listed in Data Book is for wide front,if you notice the 450 with wide front is 99.75. Anyway the SMTA and 450 use the same part # castings for front bolster , TA housing, rear end housing and the frame rails are same length.Other than hydraulics and rear cast wheels the only other castings different between MTA and 450 is the transmission top cover and center steering, gas tank support. The main differance in support is for throttle linkage.
