Chads i need your help

im finaly getting at my h if you havent seen some of the posts stupid me had bees making about easy disasembly. But now the real question is, im not sure what she is turning right now for rpm. Im assuming the stock 1,815. If i order a spring from you am i assured to get the rpm i asked for i should it check it? Im going to want to turn 2,100rpm, now im not sure if this is smart or not becuase she is old stock and tired but i guess there isnt much harm in trying, what do you think? I didnt get a chance to do a compresion test but she was running real good, was a top 10 in 4500 all the time. I am currently trying to take the head off to get it shaved .125. Now my question is will a cam regrind be absolutly necasary to make more power with the higher rpm or will she run good with more hp that stock with just the head shaved and the 2100rpm spring untill i have more money on hand? Lets talk safety first. if your that scared of it, pull the engine from the tractor, have the flywheel and crank inspected. If you find something wrong with the H flywheel and clutch, Id go find a flywheel and clutch for a 350. Use a Super H clutch disk, splines on the 350 and the H are different. Have the new flywheel inspected, resurfaced, and installed. or if you can install it. See then your upgrading to newer, possibly better parts. Thats what i would do if I took it apart, and fixed everything you find when you do eventually tear into it, and find out its shot.Its a darned good clutch upgrade too for the same amount of cash it takes to have a H redone. Then once reinstalled correctly, broken in, would I say you have a good chance that you will be ok to turn it loose. Then again, you may turn the rpm up, and be lucky that it does not come apart. if it has been redone in the last 10 years, 15 tops, not worked to death, maybe,,, If it hasnt been apart in 25 years, consider having a look at it. its just good time spent on making this safer. You have to pull the front bolster off it to get the timing cover off any ways, its not too much more to remove the engine from this point. All the bolts will be tighter and up to snuff. You will find bolts that need replaced, and fix things you find that may give you trouble in the future. Enough safety lecture right? Lets start with what you have and what your doing to get more power. Lets assume the rings are good, if not re ring it if the sleeves look good, or fix that too,,, LOL,, But if the rings are good, the Ol H might live for a while. You increased compression pressure, Next time take a compression reading, and record it to see whats going on, and you get info on paper about your engine. Kinda like adding to your operators manual. Compression increase, thats more power off the bat. You can get anywhere from a 10 psi increase to up to 35 psi increase if done right. If you get like a 20 to 25 psi increase, thats a noticable difference youll see. Little more peppy, more torque. Then you will have to recheck your carb jetting, and your timing to compensate your changes you have made. Good time to think about carbs, a new intake, have a closer look at the mechanical advance in the distributor, repair what youll find in the distributor, consider if your sticking with points, or electronic conversion. I have no prefference in points, or electronic, I like them both. Cams,, I think in this case, its wheather you want to spend the money for the cam. Youll get more from the head work, but may be a little lazy with a bigger cam. Best results for the SH-350 cams are for compression over 160 psi, and over 164 ci. I just dont think you will see that much improvement with adding a bigger cam to what you have done so far. Why? compression increases are efficency increases. You are using more of the engine potential to breathe and properly flow. its not a cubic inch kind air change, but making what you have better. Your not to the point to where you need the larger cam if your still under 164 ci. But a hopped up overbored H or a good stock H with a little help, the H cam will be fine. Dont change too many things at once,,, Start slow, and work your way up...See the results from the work you do one step at a time. You will pick up on what you need as time goes by. at least till then, yeah, you have some time and money in it, but your there and running, and maybe be able to go to McDonalds, or where ever,, LOL! As far as our governor springs are concerned, well, they do exactly what we say they do, more rpm, more HP, better throttle responce, perfect for tractors that are set up for pulling where the fine tune of the engine is critical. Yes, they are magic, they are a miracle, And they will make a H-450 scream. But no too high,, bout 2600 rpm MAX with the weights lightened up a tad. You can set them for any rpm under that, and still notice a difference. Accept no subsitute, they are the best.
