I just got a old farmall 400 running that has been sitting for about two years. Seems to run pretty good. I am looking at pulling it this summer. I was wondering what some cheaper easy things I could do to it to make it a good stock puller. I have never seen a 400 pull and don't really know what they will do. Thanks

Is there any difference between a 450 gas head and a 400 gas head?

I have already replaced points, condenser, cap, rotor, coil, and wires, and plugs. I was thinking about going to electronic ignition. Would that help any? Also I need to get a compression tester to test the engine. What kind of compression should the 400 engine have(in psi). Thanks

Electronic ignition may or not gain you any "visible" power on the dyno, but it will improve starting and throttle response, and eliminates one wear item and potential cause for trouble from the ignition system. You'll be able to open your plug gap up a little more with the hotter fire an electronic ignition gives you.

My tractor has the 450 M and W pistons and lp head and has 250-260 psi.

It will benefit greatly from a full, old-fashioned tuneup. Adjust valve lash, replace points and condensor, adjust timing, replace cap, rotor, plugs and wires, etc. Also check compression, as a proper tuneup won't do much for a weak engine.

G/MAN GOOD ADVISE !

TRACTOR IS HEAVY, TO START WITH, A VERY GOOD PIECE TO RESTORE, TUNE IT UP AND GO PULLING !

DO NOT WASTE ANY FOOLISH MONEY !

KILL IT DEAD ON THE TRACK AND THEN DESCIDE, IF THIS IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO BE INVOLVED IN !
