bolt on a w-9 carb, i did this to my M w/264 IH fire-crater pistons. ran on dyno w/stock carb, tuned timing & carb for best power, then switch to stock w-9 carb, gained 9 hp immediately. also can take a 806 gas or 715 gas combine carb and us to bottom 1/2 of carb & venturi, remove main fuel screw & gland nut from m carb, add packing from IH dealer, install in place of fuel solenoid, will help. can bore M carb to accept larger throttle plate, but will ruin idle port, runs fine, smokes idling. if your do this to a 300-450 carb, idle will be ok as idle port is @ manifold flange.

If it's a good healthy motor to start with I'd find somebody with a dyno that really knows how to tune one. Carb and timing settings are pretty much a guess without being able to load the engine and verify results. Gains of 4-5 hp are not at all uncommon and that's enough to feel on the track. A quick compression check (Be sure and have the throttle wide open.) will tell you what kind of shape your engine is in.

If the compression is at 100-125psi @ cranking speed, well, your pretty much stock. You should go with an inframe overhaul with higher compression pistons. You can do that for under 500, thats the best money spent, then start looking at the cyl head, maybe machining some off to increase compression, or lightly port and polish, or look for a 450 gasser head. put in a 450 cam too. That will make a good M with bolt on parts. You can add from there, build the carb and ignition, governor work, roller rockers, etc etc. You might see 65 hp with that setup and have less than 1000 in the whole thing if the head is in good shape. If your compression is over 150 psi, then you have something to work with,, you can rejet the carb, maybe change the venturi, rebuild the distributor, check all your adjustments, valve lash, point gaps, or plug gaps. You might find 5 hp, you might find 10hp. run a compression test, under 150 psi, think rebuild, over 150, think of tuning on a dyno. ChadS
