if it does't make a difference why spin them on concret or look endlessly for road worn tires? when you allow top cut, everyone can make their own choice.

Well guys I say this everybody has an opinion, here is mine...I do not cut, top cut, anything to my tires I have a brand new set of 13.6 38"s waiting to go on and a set of 14.9 38"s on it now the 14.9 have had the crap pulled out of them prolly 90 to 100 hooks last year. The top of the leading edge has rolled and have wore down. I can tell a difference in the way that is hooks. I have a friend that pulls a 77 Oliver with 14.9"s he topcuts his tires after every 20 hooks. He goes thru the tires but he wins some pulls too. Our association does not allow cutting of tires in any manner. He top cuts them, then runs them on the road for a couple of days and you cant tell he did it. I have seen some people get on a cement pad, put a chain around the drawbar hook it to something (tree, truck) in front of it and spin the tires in reverse and "sharpen" them and call it road wear and get away with it. If your association allows it and other people are doing it... do it. I your association dosent ... dont.

Look at Tunica results. Juda Smith pulled FS 1 and FS 11 with unaltered tires and won on both sides.

And loved every minute. in reply to Sweeper, 03-22-2006 20:13:30
Great pull, great people, sitting here looking at Hook Mag. and some good pictures of local guys and results tell me that some of the best antique pullers come from this part of the country.
I have been running uncuts on my 45 diesel for about a year (gonna try some top cuts for a few pulls while I make new set of rims)on any given day a good set of uncuts matched to your tractor will stay with the best top cuts around.
Just my most humbled opinion.

Somebody else said this better than I would about 2 months ago...

The way I've come to understand it is CUT tires are for open or modified classes. TOP CUT tires are for tractor owners who want to pull their open or modified tractors in farmstock classes. Sorry. Just couldn't resist that opening. I love to tell the TRUTH. Some will want to argue about it, but just watch how many of them will pull with TOP CUT tires in the farmstock class, then change to the wheels and CUT tires and pull the SAME TRACTOR in the open and modified classes. That paints the picture clear enough for me. Proponents call it "leveling the field." Leveling the field according to that definition would be "run what you brung."

I don't disagree with what you are saying depending on local or regional rules in your part of the country.
However,a good reason for allowing top cuts with tire size limit of 15.5 is to eliminate the discussion/argument on who is going to decide which tires have been altered and those that havn't. Limiting the tire size and speed limit usually weeds out the big motor tractors.
Again just my most humbled opinion which on most days with $1.00 may get you a cup of coffee.
