Recently, a guy we know installed a non-turbo 8.2 Detroit out of a bus, in a 8000 series truck that had a ruined 8.2-T.
He said he would have no problem simply adding the exh. manifolds and turbo to the newer 8.2 without having to change the pump or injectors etc.
Is he correct? I always thought the turbocharger req'd more fuel in a diesel engine just like in a gas one.

Isn't the compression ratio usually MUCH lower on the non turbo models vs. the turbo models?

In the 1970's turbo's were added to tractors fairly often for a cheap horsepower increase. Existing pumps were used. Sometimes they were turned up, other times the pump setting was left the same. Even with the same pump setting horsepower increased. Fuel economy increased with the turbo, not just horsepower.

Will it cause engine damage? in reply to Tom S. in Tn., 03-24-2006 08:49:10
I asked this to a guy who works at a diesel shop yesterday evening, and he showed me the different pump #"s. They are set-up differences includung governor settings. I don"t know about injectors.
I wondering now if it will cause engine damage? I suppose time will tell.
Thanks for the replies; Tom S.

It might help it burn what fuel it is getting more efficiently, therefore gaining a little more torque and horsepower, but it will probably develop MUCH more horsepower and torque if more fuel is delivered to it. Something else that should be checked is the head and valves. Many times engine builders use a different head and/or different size valves for turbo and non-turbo engines of the same displacement. That can make a huge difference.

yeah, he'll definitely gain some power, but not as much as he would by adding more fuel to it. Basically you're getting all the extra air in there but it's not being taken advantage of.

More Air + More Fuel = More Power

More Air + No More Fuel = Less Power

Just my $.02
