I've got a Farmall M with duals, just wondering why you can't pull with duals?

because if you go to 50 pulls and they let you pull it with duals on and you win 1 time the complaining will start and never end.
that is my story and i'm sticking to it,no one would want to have an M there with duals on it even if i have seen pictures of them new with duals on the back.
can't use the TA either, might get an extra 5 feet on another color and we can't have that.

Well, the thing is, tractors of the vintge of your M just didn't come with duals when they were new unless they were some special purpose type. Farmers of that era didn't have to work their fields wet, or at least usually knew better than to try(with exceptions of course). Those tractors got enough traction with good single tires and it was thought they didn't cause compaction. And they were used for all purposes on the farm, most of which the duals would have been in the way rather than an asset. Pull with duals if you like...but in a duals only class to "level the playing field".

There is no call for those type of rude responses! While I am not a "real" puller per se" I do go to one pull a year, it is a local pull, and you run what you brung! Duals, steel wheels, whatever. No trophy, just the pride of knowing you came in 8th place out of 20-30 competitors with a rusty old JD A with a bad clutch. Give a guy a break, he is probably a newbie or like me, just doesn"t know any better.

This is why I should just stay away from the tractor puller forum, you guys are always bad mouthing each other.

Dave

Ahhh! Don't let a few bad apples spoil the whole bunch for you. Fun is what it's all about. Just keep having fun while those few are rolling around in their pits.

Don't let "Just Wondering" discourage you from asking questions. Sounds more like he's "Just a Blundering Idiot." That is an often-asked question. JonFarmer and Buckshot are correct. Singles will almost always pull better than the dual-wheel applications on a hard track. It would have to be extremely soft or sandy for the duals to help. When I was a kid, my dad pulled in some classes that were supposed to be straight farm tractors. Sometimes he pulled in the dual classes, sometimes the singles. They would not change the sled any between the classes and usually the winner of the dual class was a shorter pull than last place in the singles class. It deals with the psi of the tire/ground contact area. I'm sure there's some formula for it but there are so many variables I'm not sure it would be useful. Happy pulling!

Because most tractors don't have duals, so they pull them in competition with singles. Most pulls would allow you to pull with your duals on in an "exhibition pull", as in, just for fun, not for the prize. Take your duals off and you can pull it in competition. I would think that duals on an M would do poorly on a hard track, you'd most likely spin out before the tractors with single tires would. Duals are for soft going to help float over mud, but provide too much float on hard going so the tires don't bite in as much.
