G's were antique when they were new.

This brings back old memories. Two diff 880,s that pulled back in late 70,s early 80,s. My 48 G was basically stock 1st gear 6000 lbs. One 880 from West Branch Mi. tried and tried and couldn,t do it until one year I brought my G straight from the woods to the pull and she coughed a couple times and he got me by an inch. The other one from central Mi. was tough and did his share of winning. They both had a big HP advantage and were spit polished before every pull. Funny thing was they always were asking where a G could be bought or if I knew where there was one.

With luck I may be able to try my 88 standard against your "G" a couple of times this summer Jim. ;-) Now if I can just find a good set of tires...

Take care,
A.P.

If you are talking basically stock tractors...I would take the G for soft tracks and the 880 for hard "power" tracks. The 880 can pull competitively over a wider weight range than the G in stock classes...But if you put alot of $$ in the G engine; it will probably beat the Oliver most of the time. I respect the qualities of both of these tractors! For smoothness, power and comfort the 880. For putting the power to the ground in soft conditions the G.

What type of pulling? Transfer or dead weight?
What division or weight classes? Your question
is too vague to give a useful answer.

I think a G puts power to the ground better in a stock rpm pull but the screamin olivers and molines are hard to beat in open class.

Not real familar with the 880 but I have to suggest going with the G. There is nothing like a good running "stock" G.

Hopefully the post doesn't start another brand war.

Thanks for your insight-I had a feeling you might suggest a G! By the way you seem to be quite knowledgable on Deeres. I had my 50 rebuilt a few years ago and stupid me not thinking I might pull with it put it pretty much back stock (except for .090 over alum. pistons) I wish now that when I had the head off I would have done some work to that to bump up the compression to gain some HP. Thinking of it now.... any ideas on what and how much? What do they do when they port and polish a head?

Hey 50Man pull the plugs and pull a compression check and let us know what it is on your 50,if you don't mind.I have a friend of mine that has a 54 50 and it has 125 psi per hole and with 12.4 38 tires he took M's G's and some A's on the right tracks and never choked with the creeper gear.He has had more fun with that one than all his others. He shocked me and others with it in the 5500lb class at local fair pulls.Later-Jack.

I've never messed with a 50 so I'm not sure what would be a safe amount to mill off of the head. I'm sure someone on this board will know. As far as the port/polish, basically you are enlarging the intake/exhaust ports to allow for more CFM/air exchange. Also, you can mess around a little with the valve bowl/short side radius to help with the air exchange. Let the breathing begin, 8^)

go with the "G", win or lose you will love the sound of the old girl "putting the power to the ground," and I think the spectaters, would rather watch a "G" lose a pull than watch a oliver win, just a fact, jack

We don't like watching them slow powerless john deeres. We want to watch the tractors with power speed down the track. Put the JD in a parade not in a pull.

If you buy a G you are taking a big risk, I out pull stock Gs with my 88 all the time. If you hop up a G it is just going to break in half! I didnt see Bill Bears old 880 break in half though!

At stock rpms in 6500- 7500- 8500 I will run my 88 against any G anytime. I won't win them all but I'll take my chances. I love pulling against G's that put the power to the ground better and out pull the screamin olivers. Art
