I was at the Plain City Oliver show this past year. I really liked the grounds at the show. I have a 990 Gm that I pulled with until I retired from pulling a few years ago. This might be a good time to come out of retirement. I pulled against a lot of 820 and 830 they are good competition, had most touble with 660 IH. My 990 has decent hp around 115. Might try to make the show. J Mann

In-Line Detroit, W/ Super Charger on the side of it.... I guess that makes it a 3 Cylinder... The 6 Cyliner is a "V" is it not.???

Detroit six cylinders are available in both in-line and V configurations. Also, that "supercharger" is just a big fan (roots-type blower) to blow out the exhaust and blow in clean air when the pistons uncover the cylinder ports - it's called scavenging in a two-cycle diesel engine. If you hear of somebody with say a 350 Chevy with a 6-71 blower, it would be sized for a 6-71 Detroit diesel. 6 being the number of cylinders and 71 being the cubic inches per cylinder. Hot rodders started robbing them off Detroits and installing them on their cars back in the 50s. I am not absolutley sure, but I don't think a Detroit has any real boost pressure, because until the ports are covered, there is no place to build pressure. It's been a long time since I studied Detroits, so I could be wrong. All of the valves in a Detroit are exhaust valves. Just some info I thought you might find interesting.

Their sound alone is enough to intimidate....!!!!

Detroits DO make some impressive torque...too bad they had to sound so awful... Well, they CAN make some good torque, if they are set rite...I have driven some that were real Gutless.... 290 HP, with 13 speed w/ 53,000# in the box....had to wear shooting muffs to stand the noise.!!! Then I am not sure about the # of cylinders..Sorry...Maybe someone W/ a 990 can fill us in....!!! I have a feeling that RPM's are not a problem with them....The semi tractor I drove turned 2,600RPM....even tho it didn't pull at ANY speed.!!

There is a Oliver Super 99 with the 3 cylinder GM diesel in our pulling club, he has a real hard time getting traction, I havent ever seen him win in the two years he has been with us pulling. The 830's will beat him easily.

If he is having that much of a problem running with the Deere's there is something way wrong with his setup. I would be happy to talk with him and help him through his problems. In relatively stock condition the it should be able to hold it's own against relatively stock 820/830's. Then he can at least give the Deere's a run for the money.

The Pullings not over til the Detroit sings!
Take care,
A.P.

Detroits are interesting engines, I'll give you that. I think they'll run with more wrong with them than about any other engine, also. We worked on a grain truck with an 8V-71 in it when I was in Diesel Truck and Construction at SCC in Milford, NE. The truck would just haze a little at idle. Our fuel systems instructor (George Wiruth, for any SCC alumni out there) was a real perfectionist. I don't know how many times we ran the rack and the governor on that thing, but we still couldn't get it to quit smoking. We finally pulled the airbox covers and found that there was at least one broken ring on every piston, lol. And it still ran pretty good. I've driven some trucks with Detroits in them, and they're a little different to drive. They seem to have a lot less low-end torque than a six cylinder 4-cycle. An old-timer I knew said that the way to drive a Detroit was to slam your hand in the door a couple times to get good and mad, and then get in and just drive it like you hate it, lol.
