I have a bearing on the counter shaft, inner bearing, in my Farmmall M that is grinding. I started to take the tranny apart but the distructions aren't very clear on how to remove it. Have any of you ever taken both shafts out of an M transmission and if so how do I do that. I already took the retainer clips off of the shafts.

The best way is to remove the differential entirely. Gives the pinion shaft room to move once the bolts in the bearing housing is removed. the whole front gear comes off when you remove the bearing housing , keep track of the shims,,, The pinion shaft should now come out. The lower shaft, you remove the pump drive coupler, it unscrews from the shaft, then a couple of bolts hold the seal, and bearing housing, the bearing has a clip ring around the outside of the bearing, but it dont need to come off, it should slide off the shaft. Thats it for the front,, for now,, then you have to get the clip off the shaft so the bearing can slide off, with the front bearing removed, you should have a little room to drive the shaft forwards enough to get the rear bearing off the shaft. If the constant mesh gear (front large gear) looks like it will come off easily before you remove it from the tractor,, go ahead and remove it, then take out the lower shaft and the drive gears. Just to for warn you,, its a good time to buy new seals for the brakes, and new gaskets for the axle housings. If you have a grinding sound that happens when you turn, or hit the brakes,, the differential housing is broken off the inner bearing. the pinion shaft, and the outer bearing is only what holds up the differential when this happens, making the brake shaft run crooked and make all sorts of noise. The differential can be fun to get out,,, the bull gears, and the axle housings has to be slid out, or removed entirely to get the brake pinion shaft bearing cages out. if you got it torn down that far already, its good homework to go ahead and do,,,,, JMHO,,
