I'm normally a JD collector but have a chance to buy either a early Farmall SM or a 460 for reasonable prices. Both are in original condition with factory motors. I'm not sure which to go with as far as having a good puller. Whichever one I buy, I would like to start pulling in the farmstock classes. What classes do these normally pull the best in and also are there some inexpensive things I can do to it to make it a good puller.

Also, if I ever did decide to make a modified puller, which tractor would be the best to go with as far as having more potential? i.e. motors, heads, etc.? Thanks for any feedback.

Thanks again for all of the replies. Guess I'll think on it a little while.

'51 G, The m will be a better tractor to use for pulling. With pressed wheels and some other modifications here and there you can get into the 4500lb class. Using 450 parts (cam, manifold, head) or even finding a propane head you can get enough power to pull 7500lb classes.

I pull a super M in 6-7K and dad pulls a 460 in 5-6K. I can't get as light as him, but I have a wide front. In 6K where we overlap I beat him more than he beats me. You can make more power cheaper with the 460 by just swapping in a 301 out of a combine. Chances are that the super has been rebuilt sometime in it's life and already has the 281 oversize kit in it. You'll be able to easily get the super to 5K and the 460 to 4500. Pick the one you like better, and either one will outpull your favorite color. Jake

JakeF,

THanks for the reply. I guess I'm leaning toward the 460 since I can get it in more classes. The only problem now is finding a 301 motor and how hard is it to bolt in? Any other modifications that need to be done since using this motor? Also, is the transmission strong enough for a motor this powerful or would I need to put another transmission in from something else?

The 301 will bolt right in after changing some of the bolt on accesories. The rest of the tractor should be fine, other than you may tear up the T/A, but you can just remove it and install an eliminator. You can do some work to get the M to 4500, but you can do the same work and get the 460 to 4000. If you want to pull the heavier classes you'll start to load the 460 pretty good, and I would want the heavy axles if I was gonna pull over 6K with the 460. For 6K and under It's a toss up, and at 6K above I'd go with the M or a 560. Jake

I forgot to add both SM and 460 are gas burners and both have narrow fronts.
