Hello,

My eight year old son and 16 year old daughter just bought a 1940 Farmall A in pretty good shape (though not repainted ever). They both want to pull eventually. My son is already getting a lot of seat time around the property.

My daughter will have a chance to pull this year at a local fair in the Powder Puff division for tractors 1940 and older. That is assuming she logs enough seat time to prove she can handle the tractor well.

This tractor has unloaded 9.5-24 tires on 8" rims and no weights. The pull is a percentage pull. I do not pull, so I am wondering what I should do to make sure it is firstly a safe event. After that, what can I do without sinking a lot of cash in to help the performance. We don't really care about how she finishes, but it is always good to give it your best.

Should I try to add some weight, or does it matter in a percentage pull (I have never pulled either)?

I think the drawbar is 14 1/2" and can go up or down slightly. Should I bother. They allow up to 18" but again I care a lot more about safety that performance. Anything else I should do to improve safety, even at the risk of looking wimpy?

Thanks,

Tony

Don't underestimate this little A. My main pulling tractor is a Farmall A that I pull in 2500, 3000, 3500, 4000, and 4500. So there are plenty of classes to pull in. I regularly finish in the top ten, with numerous 1st or 2nd finishes (trophy shelf is getting full!). Contrary to some people's belief, this tractor can be a handful on the track. I have not weighed the tractor properly on a few occasions and have had the front end jump up in the air on me, kind of hair raising. Needless to say I now have wheelie bars (highly recommended). All that is done to mine is an overbore kit, and pertronix ignition. The thing I absolutely love about this tractor is being able to run with and beat bigger tractors. You can hear the crowd kind of giggling when I pull up to the boat, but they always seem to have a different attitude at the end of the track!:)
Good luck and have fun!

Hey Tony. I am 16 years old and I do a fair amount of tractor pulling. You should just in case have somebody that knows Farmalls well have it checked out. Like internal parts for ex. Like piston rods, rod bearings, crank, etc. If it is ok go ahead pull it. It is tough on these smaller tractors pulling them a lot. Your daughter should have tons of practice before pulling. You are going to need a clevis on the drawbar to pull. Eventually you should take a thick d ring and weld it to a plate and bolt it on to the draw bar, but for now use a clevis. Umm weights go and pull with out some first idc. there is many ways to use weights on the tractor. Go around and look at other tractors with weight set ups, like weight brackets, etc. Then go and get some weights i would either get suitcase weights or wheel weights. Depending in what class you r in. Like 6500 to 7000. Idk how the rules and the classes work where u live. Ask people at the pull. They will help u out on certain stuff i bet. Most likely u will pull in 1st gear. Before you pull see if the club that is pulling there get a rulebook from them and see what the tolerences are for stuff. If you really want to do a lot more pulling, you need to get a bigger and stronger tractor. Like a Farmall M, Super M, or something to that size. But idk how much money you want to blow pulling. It can get very pricey. Its whatever you want to do. Oh also check to see that the draw bar is not broken anywhere and check for loose bolts. I think you should pull the A before your daughter does so nothng bad happens to her and everything works ok. Also theres a hook fee idk how much it is for the club up there by u. I dont mind helping you out one bit. If you got anymore questions just ask. Oh my name is Luc and I live in Northern Indiana and pull a farmall 400.

Luc
