Hi Guys I have a question for ya? I took a stock 49 H motor and had the crank turned 20 thousands, Put Aftermarket high domes in it had the head stock H head plained about 60 thousands. New stock valves head all reworked. I polished the intakes in the head and 3oo manifold with a brake cyl hone. It has a 300 Cam shaft Used off eBay. And a Old M carb. and I also ground and reworked the Governor a little. So that's basically what I did to the motor. It has about 10 hours on the motor now and I am running 15 w 40 in it. OK I have run plenty of Hs a SH, a 300, And Ms, SMs,and lots of big IH tractors on the farm but this little H is something different. I have not checked it yet for RPMs But I have to believe its pushing over 2100 for sure and it screams. I am afraid to open it up. On the bush hog 5 footer in 3rd gear I cant find anything thick enough to have her over half throttle. I am also getting something Hot from the exhausted here and there landing on me. Is this old motor OK putting out Rpms like that or should I turn the bolt on the gov in some. I am running one of my own built mags on it also. Any Help would be appreciate JON

Id back it down for sure on the rpms. The long bottom bolt inside the governor housing, adjust it closer to the housing to back it down. I would say 2000 is plenty, a Super H at 10%over is 2050, you will be ok there if its solid. Do ya have an old muffler on it? That may be whats shooting hot material out the manifold, A piece of old rust, or carbon in the exhaust can come loose ??? Chad

Yeah, kinda what it sounds like. maybe put a spark arrester on it for a while? Metal screen, longer pipe extension on the muffler? Chad

Go on and hook to a sled and see how proud you are then. It's a differnt type of power needed .

Oh I have hooked to many sleds, If it was not for a bad back this little girl would be stripped down and have the tires off my loader h on her and heading to the next pull. Thats what she was origanelly built for.. But the injury has side lined me. She needs a little more breaking in on a disc or something and some fine tuning . Tghen if I can find a big boy to rangle tires and weights she will hook. JON

You need to find out how many RPM it's at for sure, not just the ol seat of the pants/ear tach. I'd keep it at 2000 or less if it's just getting used around the farm.

If I put on an automotive style wire that isn't solid wire I can get my snapon to read correctly. You may try it with yours and see if that works.

I just wanted to add that I have 150#s compression dry and 160#s wet compression on all cylinders. I actually think this tractor would be putting out close to 2500 RPMs if thats possible. JON
