Got power-no traction

My JD 70 has plenty of power but always seems to spin out. The tracks are outdoors and most of them are soft. I'm running 15.5x38's with about 9 psi. Would I be better off to lower the tire pressure and "squish" the tires some?

What if I run 16.9x38's on 16" rims. I have the rims - just need the tires. I run 14.9x38's on 14" rims on a JD A and it usually kicks butt. Anybody got any 16.9x38"s they want to trade for some 18.4x38"s (Firestone Field & Road)?

Have you ever payed attention to your tire foot print when you back up to the boat to unhook !

9lb's with that tractor ain't going to make it !
If your on 15-5's , rim size is 14", What do you have for tires, what brand ! If your running a tall lug, they will roll over, find a set of junk 3/4"s woren out old tires, with rock solid bars, they don't got to look pretty !
Miss mateched could be okay aswell, Your digging a hole and rolling over the bars !

9lbs, Thats just a problem !
I've spent alot of money on tires, all I know is If you have a pretty sharp leading edge, and if the majority of the entire bar is intact, they will hook, I prefer 30 degree ! co-op
Division 1 3mph !

Just put bigger tires on if the rules will allow you too. 2 things will happen, you'll run out of power or you go down the track. If you don't run out of power, then its down to some fine tuning with air pressure.

To answer some of your questions - The tires are fairly new with high lugs - I have pulled 7000#, 8000#, 9000#, and once 10,000#. Seems to pull best in the two middle classes. I carry about 150# on the front which allows the front to lift only a few inches.

I would add a touch more weight to the front to try and minimize the front lift. With an 11' wheel base (from memory and needs checking) and a 20" hitch length - a 6" rise in the front produces .9" drop at the hitch, not considering any tire sidewall compression which will make it more.

Seems like the green 70s that I pull against all have bigger tires than 15.5's. What weight classes are you pulling in?

if your tires are doing more than just slightly wrinkling, then you don't have enough air...it's easy to think you need less when you actually need more sometimes. What weight class are you in? My tractor never has less than 14 lbs. on a 14" rim in the 5500 lb. class. That's 16.9-38s. Works pretty well but if the track is biting well I have to go up around 16 lbs. to keep the tire from cupping up in the center.

I also have a JD70 that I pull some in central NY. It has 14.9 x 38 bias tires. I've yet to take a first place, but have a few 2, 3, 4 and 5's. Such is life, right? I seem to have good luck with 20-25 psi. Getting the balance right by adjusting the length of the hitch and placement of weight seems to be my challenge. My own theory is that if you let the tires get too soft you will start sacrificing hitch height due to tire squish, which will lead to a spin out. Same thing if your front raises more than a couple inches. If your nose stays put on the ground then you are not transferring all the weight possible for the most traction.

You may not be running enough air pressure or you may need to pull in heavier classes. After you spinout and unhook from the sled pull forward enough so you can see your spinout holes. If the bottom of the holes are fairly flat, then you are about right on the air. If the holes are rounded, then you are running too much air. If the holes are cupped in the middle, then you don't have enough air pressure. If your air pressure is about right, then you may want to pull in heavier classes or check your weigh placement vs. other JD's in the same class. Are your tires new with tall lugs or old, hard 7/8 worn out lugs? Lots of factors come in to play besides air pressure. Hope this helps some and your footage may vary.
