Head gasket leaking?

Worked all week and finally got my M back together. Tried to start it and coolant is coming out around the head gasket. Filling the cylinders also. A local machinist made me a copper head gasket, .060 thick, a real nice copy. 450 LP head I was running before with no problems. Did have bigger valves put in and I think they installed all new seats. I installed the gasket dry. Should I have coated it with something? It seems to be leaking everywhere. Anybody ever had this problem before? I just can't help but think it's the gasket. I did drain the coolant, pulled the plugs, and blew the coolant out, and finally got it started. Seems to run fine. Any opinions or past experiences much appreciated.

Flogger -

This is the same trouble that I have had with copper gaskets in the past. In addition, I have found that their reliability in maintaining a seal on the combustion chamber (compression) leaves quite a bit to be desired.

I got away from the copper gaskets and went to a Lubbock custom gasket. They use a material that is similar to OEM gaskets and crimp in a steel fire ring. The great part is that you just ink up the top of your block and lay a piece of posterboard on it. This transfers the block inprint to the posterboard, from which they make your new gasket. If you want certain water, oil, or bolt holes left out of the new gasket, all you have to do is color them in with a marker! I have had great luck with these pieces in large bore engines up to 12 to 1 compression. To make it even better, they are usually less than $100.00 each. If you have any questions, feel free to email me.

I have made my own copper gaskets, but I have always used the copper silicone on both sides when putting it together. You can buy it about anyplace. Parts stores, Wal-mart, Farm-Fleet stores. Also after using soft copper for awile and taking it apart if it is smashed, you might have to anneal it again. It is like fluffing a pillow that you have slept on for awhile. You heat it up with a torch and make it soft again. If you haven't run this one very long, you probably won't have to do that.-----deadeye
