I need some advice. Last year i pulled my 4020D in a local stock pull as part of a bet i had with my friends. I placed fourth, but i know i can do better this year. I don't have a problem with power, as my rpms never dropped below 2000. and i think my weight distribution was good because the front tires just came off the ground by an inch. only problem i had was with traction. I have old Stomil 45degree tires that are about 50%. These tries never grip good on any hard surface. I have about 9lbs of pressure in them. What shoudl I do to get more traction?? I amthinking about getting new tires, but am not sure what kind to get, or if there is something else i should do to get more traction.

Thanks for the help...

I run the 10-12000 class with my 4020 .
Have 18.4x38 BFG Radials with 25% tread , 18psi .
Run 2nd gear in 12,000 120hp dyno class most of the time always spin out but don't have enough to run 3rd gear .
Run 10-12 open class in 4th gear and she really gets a good bite in the 12 , tires squat a little .
I do not like to see tires run low I think you loose traction , look at your tracks when you are done and you will see that the tire in not making good contact in the middle when pressure is too low . Tires with more than 50% tread tend to dig in too much and you are always trying to get up out of the hole . That's just my opinion though , seems to be working for me but every condition is different . JIM

Hey in general you should have at least 3 bars of the tire tread flat on the ground. It varies from track to track. If you get new tire i would choose firestone field and road. very good tires.

What weight class? Try about 14 lbs. or so...you don't want the tires to squat, you just want them to flatten out.

I pulled in the 11500 class. when the tires grip they squatted a little bit, and then they suddenly loast all traction and spun without squatting or flattening, and the front went back on the ground when this happened... at least thats what all the pictures show... i am thinking its just the type of tires they are....

sounds to me that you hit a spot in the track that has gone away...realy chewed up or if it was a clay track it was rock hard ....happins on clay all the time theres a track around here that gets ripped up at the start but at the end it gets smooth as glass the only ones that can overcome it are guys with sharp tires low air pressure wieght and the power to keep it moveing...on buddy of mine has a JD R for clay tracks he pulls with 2 ton of wieght added and when he get to the end of the track im not sure how the rubber stays on the rims cuz the tractor squats down to the rims...keep tryin youll get there..... chad

how much weight are you running on the front too much will cause a spin out bf goodrich are ok but you need to see if they will let you have raidial tires an old set of power gr
ips or silvertowns will do great or firestone f151 field &road are the best and try to get your hitch height as high as the rules will let you

There is no limit on what kind of tires you can run. I am concidering getting new tires because this tarctor is also used for farming, and it easily gets stuck in a little mud, or even on steep hills. I looked at the firestone web page, and I am thinking about getting the Radial All Traction 23degree tires. Does anyone have these, and what do you thinbk of them??

Thanks

New tires & pulling usually don't mix. The deep tread tends to put to much dirt in front of the pan & makes it harder to pull.

I think that's the best tire made today , just my $.02 . However it like any other tire with lots of tread isn't good for pulling . Probably the best thing to do if you do more than a couple pulls is to find a pair of rims and a almost wore out set of radial BFG's or old Firestones and change over in the summer , I know it's more work . I don't know how much you pull so that's up to you . What size tires do you have?

They are 18.4 - 34
I only do a couple of pulls a year, and I would rather have the better tires for the farm work. I have had too many close calls with the 4020 where I almost didn't make it up some of the hills on my farm. Most of the tractors i pull against have new or almost new radials and they do really good with them. Thanks for all the help!
