A friend of mine purchased a 42 M that was set up for antique pulling. Beautiful weight brackets and wheelie bars, Two sets of wheels and tires, and 28 IH suit case weights. This engine has the M&W stroker crank, stock M head. Someone pulled the sleeves and installed larger pistons but never made any kind of rings for the counter bores. This tractor only has 57 hp at 540 rpm and 145 to 150 cyl pres. He pulls with our club which requires stock rpm and 3.8 mph speed limit. Hopefully some of you Farmall guys have some Ideas. Thanks much, Dave S

A 450 gas head would help, so would a 450 cam. That might get you in the 180psi area. Id pull the head off to see what is in it to be sure. Could be a 4-1/8 bore piston, if the M block was used and wasnt bored. If it is 4-1/8th bore, then Id have the block fitted for 450 sleeves, that solves all your deck problems. Makes the engine rebuildable too. There is alot of things you can do with the wrist pin location and pick up alot of power, just depends on how extent you want to do. If you spent a little more time in the pistons and block, have a good short block, you can save a little money and keep your head thats on it, and still make a big increase in power, then if you still need more power, head swaps can now be in the future. Cost wise,, another 500-1000 in the right places, can save you 2000-2500 later down the road. JMHO, ChadS

I dynoed a SM a couple months ago with pretty much a stock short block and saw a peak of 77hp @ 540PTO. That was with a 450LP head and a Johnson Y-type manifold. The last few HP comes from tuning the length of the intake pipe infront of the carburetor. Working on the fuel jet in the carburetor helped a lot. If you arent getting enough fuel into the engine, its not going to make squat for power.

Get some rings made from an old sleeve with the right ID bore and comp psi will go up. Also get the cam reground for slightly higher comp at stock rpm by berrycam.com and that should make the hp go up. With the other posts head, manifold and carb work 75 hp is very possible. Good luck and have fun. Electronic ignition helps too.
