with a short styled block, flat head and high compression pistons what kinda compression will it have? I would like 185 lb. range to keep from using head gaskets all the time. Is this strong enough to turn 16.9"s with 20" drawbar in low gear? Classes will be from 5500-6500. Thanks

It will be fine.I pulled my 53G with a regular cyclone head shaved.250 thousanths to the eyebrows and into them up to 7500lbs on some tracks.Mine done great in 65 and 7000lbs with 16.9x38 Firestone Super All Traction tires.Mine without the flat head was at 135 psi per cylinder with.090 M&W high compression aluminum pistons.57-58 hp was all I could get with my setup but hung on down on the end where I needed it.Miss that ole girl.Your flat gead should help quite a bit on compression.

JAK , God bless you, you are the first person I've heard post on here who has addressed the fact that peak hp readings mean very little and are way overated. They are , as you stated, a very weak indicator of the actual pulling ability of any given tractor. It is the width or range (in rpm) of the torque band that counts. A pulling tractor or working tractor will spend very little actual time at the rpm where the max hp reading is measured. ie , a 302 Z-28 motor makes over 302 hp at 6000 rpm. At 2000 it won't pull itself out of a mud hole. Build it for torque (volumetric efficiency) and not peak hp. It will win more pulls!

Before the valves and head shaving, and guides it was 55 hp.When finished it was 57 respectivly on the dyno. That really aggrivated me because I was expecting more than two or three hp with all the labor and money spent. When she hooked to the sled I soon seen where the difference was, dern what the dyno said she just kept lugging where before it would choke down and quit.I wished I knew how much torque was gained but never will now.Jack(TN).

Not sure what you would have for cranking pressure with that combination. If you have the styled block, M&W style pistons with a cyclone head cut down to the eyebrows you should be around 120-125psi, depending on cam. I know that combo is strong enough to run 16.9's up to 6500, and should make 60hp. With the late head and block there will be no head gasket problems, and is able to run on pump gas, unlike the styled block/flat head, that will require 100+ octane fuel.

Mine had a stock cam I reckon,I never messed with it and got 135 psi at cranking speed.Never could get to 60 hp but me and my friend George tried on the dyno several times,we got close.Shaving the head and cleaning up the ports and replacing the valves, springs, and guides helped my low end torque tremendously.Like them G's!
