I'm building a new motor for my H. I have three options - I have a stock H motor, a 300 motor, and a 350 motor. I don't mind spending the money for boring and matching pistons, but what is the biggest I can get in the H block, or should I bore the 350 Block?? I'm going to use the 350 Head and Carb. I don't want to mess with stroking it, but would like to get pistons as big as possible with out hard blocking it. Just looking for some good, honest, experienced help.

I have no dog in this hunt, pay close attention to your club rules as far as block casting numbers and what you can interchange.
Of course the later model block would always be better ! Forget sleeves, the top counterbore can be filled by a qualified machine shop .

If your pulling division I or II do not waste a boat load of money, would highly recommend not wasting time on an (h) chassis

any tractor can be built to pull well. Sure, some are easier/cheaper to build, but if you hate what youre driving, whats the point.

I've been reading some of your responses. You mentioned "Volbrachs" as someone who had a 3.75 piston to go in a 350 block without the sleeves. Tell me more. This is what I'm looking for. Who are they, and where are they. I think this will work. Are they stepped head pistons? What do I need to do to bump the compression up with these pistons?

You see his ads in the red power magazine. if you order them for a 350,, you get the small wrist pin,,, then, off set the pin location on the rods, and remachine the pistons to fit, and that makes a higher compression piston, yes, they have domes almost identical to the M&W half moon domes. Good fella to do business with! If you cant find the number, Ill see if I got it somewhere,, Chad

I beleive if you used the 350 block ChadS on this forum stated a 44 Massey piston would work (4" bore). Same compression height.

Yes, there is a Massey 44 Flat top piston that has a 4 inch bore, 2.5 compression height, (same as H IH) Has a 1.25 wrist pin diameter. Now, its possible to put the big Massey pin in the H rod, Id have to measure how thick the H wrist pin bushing is, and see how it can be done. I know it can be done, its been a while since Ive thought of that setup,,, On the Block,,, if the 350 block will go out to 4 inch bore,,, They have been known to go out that far without putting in sleeves, but, Id have sleeves put in and hard block the water jackets. you have a better chance of having a thicker cyl wall that way. Ive got a big bore 350 block with wet sleeves put in,,, set up to go to 4 inch,,, and have a very thick sleeve,,, Id let go pretty reasonable. Id betcha that with the 4 inch bore and get the compresion up by using a good cyl head,,, 55-60+hp and thats real good without a stroker crank. ChadS
